I have a passport issued in 1997 and have just applied for an exchange program to New York and Boston.

Will my passport be ok for the US in light of their recently changed regulations with regards to passports?

Probably not. Is it handwritten? Best to ring the passport office and see what they say.

i'm no expert on this but this summer when i forgot my passport was out of date i had to go into the passport office to get my new passport, whilst waiting the 2 hours in th queue i think i remember seeing a notice saying "people who intend flying to the states: due to new security concerns in the states passports have to be machine readable."

if your passport is machine readable then you should be okay, but still give them a call.

There have been other threads on this if you do a search.
Most Irish passports are machine readable and have been for at least 10 years. My last one that I got in 1995 was fine. Its the old handwritten ones that are the problem but double check with the passport office if you want to be sure.

    Search is disabled.

OP, you should be fine if its from 1997. To be sure, read this from the US Embassy in Dublin.

It is a UK passport and judging by the Dublin Embassy site it aint valid

The personal info page has to have a white strip at the bottom with numbers and letters on it.

Mine has the white strip, but it is blank.

The thieving sods charge €88 for a new one...so I looked up the price of an Irish one, thinking I could save some money, as I am eligible for one, but even that is €75...

If the back page has info like what I typed below then it is machine readable
and will be ok for the US, I'm only back from there

    P<IRLSURNAME<FORENAME1<FORNAME2<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
    PPNUMBER<<9IRLDATEOFBIRTHM/FEXPDATE<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<2

I take it that info has to be printed on the white strip...?

If so, mine is blank, so I need a new one.

    Thanks for the info.

Anyone travelled to the States recently and know if a machine readable passport is all you need? I've checked with Aer Lingus and Oasis site and both seem to be of the opinion that that's all we need until October next year when new passports will be required.

I had no problems two weeks ago.

An MRP is fine - and still will be until it expires.
