Rebuilding my engine in Malahide/Swords

    Hello there,

My MGB has a broken piston ring. I think that the time has come for a full rebuild. I figure that buying an exchange engine is not an option given the shipping costs from the UK.

Unfortunately, I do not have the space needed to store the car and do the job myself. So I am looking for a keen mechanic/workshop in the Malahide/Swords area who can help me with this project.

I am thinking along the lines of a slight rebore, new pistons etc, balanced crankshat, new oil pump, possibly a new Webcon alloy cyl/head and a slightly better camshaft, nothing aggressive.

Ideally a classic car shop who can accept that I would like to be part of the project and get my hands dirty. I would like to keep my budget on the tidy side, but prepared to splash the cash where it is needed for a good quality result.

    Any recommendation?

    Thanks

Not your area, but Dun Laoghaire. There is a mechanic there who works on mg's and knows his stuff. i got him to do some stuff on the stang and he was more then happy to let me "muck in", very nice guy. Comes highly recommended in MG circles.

Not sure if he'd want his details here, but pm me and I'll drop you his details.

Looks like I am headed to get a recon engine straight from the UK as all shops I talked to here have discouraged me to get the engine machined etc. The final quote got me to cough a lot.... Now I just have to find where to do this. Anybody with a barn willing to let me for a week end and do the swap?

There is an MG specialist in Donabate. He did a similar job foir a friend of mine on his MGB last year !

Dont know his name or contact number but he is based on the Beaverstown road, you may need to take a spin down there and ask !

    Shipping cost isn't necessarily prohibitive.
I got an engine delivered to me in Dublin and my old one collected by a company called Vege in the UK (www.vegeuk.com) via TNT for £180 sterling.

Yep, shipping costs for the engine back and forth would be £180. Not too bad.
