Lo, got my campus internet sorted this morning but neither irc or steam connect. I was told both are set up so that their ports bypass the firewall. Is there anything in specific I have to do for them to work?

Hmmm, didn't know that we would be allowed run things like Steam over the campus network. Was it Computer Services who told you this?

Steam worked last year alright and IRC definitly works...

You sure you have the proxy settings and all that setup right for the apps?

Steam is a content delivery system for certain games, the most notable being Half-Life 2. Instead of downloading patches from a website, Steam automatically downloads and installs game updates for you.

There is no way to set the proxy in Steam Faceless Man, did it just connect automatically? Or maybe CS have closed the ports?

for irc, set proxy in your irc client to "proxy.dcu.ie".

Did that and still no success, I assume mIRC works fine with it? Maybe i've buggered up the LAN settings

Also, change your port to 3128.

Regarding Steam, I emailed the CS helpdesk and they said it should still be working but asked me to send on a list of ports that it requires, which I did. So fingers crossed.
