    Hello there,

I am now about to give the go ahead to import my two 1975 ladies into Ireland and I just want to mkake suer that I have understood what I am putting myself into re import tax, VRT and Road Tax. I confes that I am still not too sure that I have gotten it right.

I understand that because the cars are more than 30 years old (both built in Jan 1975), I will not pay any Import Tax, I will not pay any annual Road Tax. Is that right? Now what exactly is VRT? What surprise will I have? Do I need to get them through the NCT (is that the technical visit every two years?).

    Thank you for your help.

    Hi Eric

Cars over 30 years old are subject to a fixed Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) of €50, regardless of value.
Cars over 30 years old are subject to a fixed annual road tax of €42, regardless of engine size.
Cars over 30 years old are exempt from the NCT, but you should still ensure the car is roadworthy and safe. E.g. no lights will result in a fine.

So not entirely tax-free, but fixed small amounts.

If the car is borderline (say first registered in 1975) you will need proof of registration that shows it is over 30 years old. The Carte Gris should show this, no?

Thanks DS20, this is excellent news. Yes papers show that dates of manufacture were Jan 75 so I am "safe" :)

It's actually the date of first registration, not manufacture. Car could be made Jan '75, but not sold until December. I take it this means the TA is not going to make it :(

I'm actually looking at an ex millitary landy in the uk, which was only registered when the MOD released it in 1986, but it's actually a 72....

    hmm

If you can prove it's a 72, you'll be fine.

    Not quite correct.

Road tax can vary from county to county.
I've seen some vintage vehicles with €55 Annual Tax Discs (Kildare?).

Regardless, it's still little to pay for the priviledge of driving a classic on the road ! :)

It's not Kildare so, but some counties are definitely dearer than €42. I saw it on some council website (motor tax prices).

Incidentially, I saw a vintage tractor with a €31 tax disc at Fingal show?
Parhaps it was 'arrears paid' or suchlike?!
