Getting checked

I would like to get tested for Hiv as a result of sleeping with this girl without using protection. I was seeing this girl for a number of months but didnt know how much of a slapper she was until after.

But i would prefer to go to a private doctor instead of going to the hospital to get it done for free as it worries me and the more private it is the better.

Does it just cost for going to see the doctor or would i also have to pay for the test.

    Thank you.

This is not a test that your Dr can preform thier office.
Most likely s/he will just make an appointment/referal to the hospital anyway.
The thing is under irish law if you do go via your gp and for what ever
insurance reasons an insurance company askes for your drs name for a
medical back ground the dr will tell them you have had a HIV test and that
then makes you a risk taker in the eyes of the companies.

You can ring and contact the help line above and they will advise you the
best way to go about it. The help line is confidentail and covers the country.

I went and got a test done there a cuple of months ago. (just for the sake of making sure all is well) I was told you have to wait 3 months after the last time you had unprotected sex with this person for a blood test to be done. But a swab test can be done . I went privet as I could get it done that day that I decided to go. Went to a place below the Pharmisy on Oconnell street. It cost €40 (there abouts) for blood and swab test. There is a stickyed topic about STI's and places to go. Best look at that and give a ring around.

[edit=2]Phone your GP and see what his arrangements are[/edit]

You should also consider a STI check-up. There are links here: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=152605

what exactly is a swab test?
If i ask for a sti/std test, does that also cover Hiv?

Is that true about the gp having to tell the insurance company you had a test and therefore making you a risk.
    thanks.

    Hey,

I've been in your situation more than once (slappers love me. WOO!) Also, my uncle died from AIDS related complications so you can imagine I'm quite the paranoid... (and reading about HIV is my weird little hobby.)

I used to worry myself to unbelievable levels. Since then I've been tested and I'm perfectly fine.

I seriously regret the worrying I was doing. It is a TOTAL WASTE OF TIME. It only makes you feel horrendous. And when you get your HIV negative test result back (and I am sure you are negative), you'll be thinking you were an idiot for worrying so much.

It's highly highly highly highly unlikely you are HIV+. Stop worrying. Get tested!! Move on.

    Really, stop worrying. It's pointless.

thanks for the advice dublin man...
I would say im 99% sure i dont have it either. Like the girl wasnt really a slapper. But she had a number of long term relationships...
But when i think about it it does get worrying...

Yay and nay. It's good to be worried and to go get yourself tested, especially after unprotected intercourse. You should of course, get tested for STDs as well. Don't be overly worried though.

You should be able to get it done by any any GP, its just a blood sample [edit] (doctor takes sample and sends it to hospital).

Note: A lot of GPs no longer do blood tests of any nature whatsoever- ring ahead and check with the GP whether they do or not. Normal practice these days is to forward patients to the local hospital as an outpatient with the phlebotomy clinic. Normally these are morning only clinics, weekdays only. You do not have to pay the outpatients fee for this. It bugs the living hell out of me the way things are going- even if you can see where they are coming from.....
