All the PC's in the house connect wireless-ly through a router in the hall.

    IP Range : 10.12.1.X

Myself and my brother have gigabit nics, connected through crossover cable.

    IP Range : 1.1.2.X

How can i stop windows XP looking through wireless when i want to transfer files to/from my PC to my brothers, and go through the wire?

Remove the default gateway from the 1.1.2.x adapter. Win XP should then send out all packets for 1.1.2.x on that adapter. In theory.

on both your and your brother's machines,

    Go to network Connections,
Select 'Advanced' from the menu bar
Select 'Advanced Settings' from the drop down list
Under the 'Adapters and Bindings Tab':
use the arrows to priorize the Gigabit nics.

XP should look for that adapter first.
