There is a hissing sound coming from the fuel pump of my 01 Mondeo. I only got it friday so I have a 6 month warrenty but I was talking to a mechanic this morning (just someone I know) and he said that the garage might not replace the part till it actually fails which could happen tomorrow or maybe next year plus a new one is about €600 i'm told. Is this correct or do they have to replace the part now that its starting to make a noise?

If the pump is on the way out and there's no doubt that it will fail - maybe you should help it along the way! :) Then the garage cannot argue.

By right they should replace it now, unless they cant find anything wrong with it,

and i would have thought a fuel pump would cost anything from €90-150 depending on where you go, but you can guarantee that the labour cost will be a lot more than the price of the pump

My thoughts exacly :D Maybe I'll get that same mechanic to have a "good" look at it. I'll see what the garage has to say first.

Does or how does this "hissing" differ from the normal sound from a Mondeo fuel pump?.
Some pumps are more audible than others normally. eg MB have a very noisy pump per my comparisons.

If you want, do a pressure and volume check on it. Probably cost you $100. If you cannot do it yourself, but a noisy pump is not a sign of imment failure.

If the pump hisses when its engaged (ie turn key to position 2) thats normal but once you start up it should not be audible.

Mine is only noisy when actuated otherwise its fine, another anti-German slur! ;)

I'd expect the same noise from the pump, whether it be the 2 sec priming action or constant running. The one difference being, the engine is not running for the 2 sec prime period, so "appears" much louder as it is not overwhelmed by the engine, gearbox and exhaust rattling when the car IS running.

Get someone else to activate and start the car, while you stand by wherever the pump is located and listen carefully.

Nothing again MB, just that I could hear the pump while seated inside inthe back seat. Never heard the pump in the Camry.
