    Howdy,

Im looking at accessing one of my windows machines from the internet for the first time and Im puzzling over the relative strengths of VPN or SHH.

The PC will be connected to the internet using ISDN (due to move to DSL soon) and is running win Xp or 2K running zonealarm and AVG. I want to allow access from a fixed IP or a tiny IP range on the internet.

I've been looking at 2 products

Mostly I'll be using Remote Desktop so far I looked at 2 software products

WiSHH and Wingate - am I on the right track? I only have a couple of hundred euros to spend tops.

Should I be considering a more hardware based solution? I have an old desktop I could sacrifice as an applicance to load something like IPCop? Would that support my isdn modem?

I guess Im looking for some pointers....

I can't recommend any commercial software, but I've used a similar setup with free software in the past. Take a look at VNC (TightVNC and RealVNC are the most popular varieties), and see what you think of that. It's not a secure protocol though (your login is secure, but the rest of the session can be sniffed), so if you're security conscious you'll want to setup an SSH tunnel for connecting over the internet. I used cygwin and OpenSSH for my SSH server, but I'm sure there are other SSH servers for windows available.

I think ultra VNC can encrypt the connection

If this is just a home PC you need access to, i'd suggest MyWebExPC www.mywebexpc.com .

It's free, utilises SSL & is based on citrix technology.
