Hope this is the right forum for this question.

If I write a website, how do I get it listed on the Google serach engine? How do companies get their site listed so high.

Have just started writing a very basic site and was just wondering how to get it listed and as high up on the search results as possible.

I run two websites and I got my url redirection from www.dot.tk and my website gets a top 5 listing from google. It depends on the subject matter/content of your website too.

http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=23 would be better - have a look through the archives...
Page Ranking is complex to say the least - (re: google) a domain name is a key factor, the actual subject material (i.e. Page content) relevance is important. (Meta tags to a much lesser extent..). It seems to base relevance on weightings to words, and word pairs - what weighting - only the google god can tell...
Sorry...but you should really google it (it hurts) :)

Somewhere in google there's a guide to what gets you higher, don't ask me where but I have read it and it's quite good. Make sure you register your site with the major search engines, google yahoo, etc and do this on a regular basis (every 8 or 10 weeks will help) but the main thing about google is validation of your site so you have to get other sites to link to yours, as many as posssible. Domain is important too. Takes easily 6 weeks for crawlers to get around web so don't expect to be found in the morning - anywhere on google. Hope this helps, not the most experienced in the world but have a few sites appearing in the top 10 when right words used!!! (What is a right word???????????????????????????????????????)

Seems to throw up some good material there.

I just googled google to learn how to google a better result for my site on google. Who said language evolution wasn't fun?

yeah, you need a bit of voodoo, and then generally after a year or two you will get good results IF its specific, try decide on around 4 keyword combinations that you want and try focus them into your site, along with a matching domain name and that should help a lot. Of course getting your site linked on lots of other related websites will help too.
