I managed to get my first laptop. Shes a beaut! Compaq hp nc4010. Now the battery so far is giving 3 nd a bit hours with wirless on so no complaints there. The only thing im wondering is, how should i go about preserving it. Should i keep it plugged in all the time (with the battery in or out?) or should i keep using it on the battery alone. I know its a basic question so id appreciate any views or tips everyone out here has. cheers

when running on mains power you should remove the battery.

Mmm!...I suggest you leave it installed as the battery will loose charge over time depending on the technology used so leave it in when using the mains to keep it at 100%.

The major battery killer is HEAT!!!

Keep the underside of the laptop well ventilated and try and not have it resting on your lap/on top of a bed for too long as heat will increase to VERY HIGH levels causing damage to componnts throughout your laptop and not just your battery!

Yes, but another reason batteries life shortens is due to "topping them up" rather then charging and then letting them run out completely.
