Connecting PC to laptop - problems

I'm trying to connect my PC to my sony laptop (both running Win XP, PC has Home version, laptop has Pro version) via an ethernet cable (no routers or anything like that), but it won't work! Both computers keep telling me that the network cable is disconnected, even though they're plugged into each other!

Is this a faulty cable or a computer problem?

I tried (many times) the set up home networking wizard, but when I get to the first step, both laptops say that the network connections are disconnected.

Can anyone shed any light on this (I'm going mad!)?

Is it a crossover cable? They're usually yellow and not grey.

when you are connecting two pcs without using a hub or router you need to use a crossover cable. Crossover cables have two wires switched at the each end so that the transmit wire goes to receiver and vice versa. standard network cables are straight through, as the hub/router handles the transmit to receive swap.

    Okay, thanks for the explanation.

So once I get my hands on this type of cable, it should be pretty straightforward to do then yeah?

Theres a guy here on boards galwaydude18 or something like that. Havnt dealt with him myself but if u check the sticky in the computer section you can see for yourself hes dealt with alot of people. A fiver for a crossover cable is very good.
