    Knoppix CD

    www.sysinternals.com utilities - essential stuff
    AVG
    Zonealarm
    Spywareblaster
    AnalogX Script Blocker
    Reg Clean

    if you want

oh and btw, have symantec Client security 3.0.1 and nothing else, well nothing else really needed.

our server is somethign completely different though

okay on the work pc i have

    zone alarm
symantec corporate edition- this removes both virii and adware (or expanded threats as it calls them) virii spotting is constant, adware is spotted (and removed) in the weekly scan
i suppose automatic updates can be included in my security

    as for fixing i use
erd commander- its like a bootable cd of xp, password cracking, ghosting, scan disk, ect.
ultimate boot disk - has lots of uses

Anyone that uses p2p applications to make available material that could be considered distributed against the wishes of the copyright holder should also think about using an IP blocker like Peerguardian or Protowall. This does give some measure of security against intrusion by companies like MediaSentry and BAYTSP, but it is not a guarantee of protection.

Protowall and blocklist manager - http://www.bluetack.co.uk/index.php

    Peerguardian - http://peerguardian.sourceforge.net/index2.html

For existing Peerguardian users http://methlabs.org and http://blocklist.org should be considered compromised, you should update your software.

I am assuming you are running a windows operating system on your home system (though the same principles apply to mac OS and Linux users as well)

Does anyone else use your home computer or could they?
Could anyone including yourself install new applications on your home PC, that contain trojan's, spyware or virus?
If other people can use your PC, then you may not be there to supervise their activity and they can innocently compromise your data.

What if you needed to connect to the internet in the future to check email or a specific site?
From experience it can take less than 20 minutes to compromise an unpatched windows OS when connected to the the internet.

Do you backup your data regularly (letters, emails, photos, music etc.)?
If no backups and your PCs' hard disk fails (it will eventually) or your PC is stolen, then your data is lost forever.

Iam changing to AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic 6 after reading this review of 37 anti-virus programs.

    http://overclockers.com/articles1260/

I have been posting this everywhere on boards. Dont know why probably because with every other programs they are tested and fully reviewed however with anti-virus software its "well AVG is what I use......" and no evidence to back it up. Now I find it (AVG) was not great and missed three viruses when I ran the new virus scanner.

Maybe someone else could try it run AVG and then a new program to see if it missed anything. Maybe go to some porn sites to build up a nice collection of crap on your computer first.

I only run Symantec Corporate antivirus 10. As long as you have a little common sense and your router has a NAT (which almost all do) I dont see why you'd need a cocktail of security programs bogging your PC down.

With firefox instead of IE, not using limewire/kazaa/other mainstream crap, a bit of common sense and an up to date virus scanner, i dont honestly see how anyone could need anything else...

    Zone Alarm

    Mike.

I used ZoneAlarm for a few years(even bought the pro version),everything was grand until they brought out Version 6.PC started doing some very strange things, worst was there was no way I could get it to run updates for Norton AV.
It didnt warm me either(as it used) that the av defs were out of date. When I finally copped it I had to d/l megs of updates.Went back to the previous V5.5 and it seemed to be fine, but have since removed it and am running Sygate now.

Might go to AVG when my Norton sub runs out in November.

    Only me use's the computer.
I know i will protect my computer shortly but with a 56k modem it just takes so long to install everything and the updated patches. Use winxp pro sp1.
I normaly use firefox, Zonealarm and Nod32 to protect my computer. Was running them 3things for 6months and never got anything. Also use spybot but due to using firefox spybot is no good any more.

The same happened to me, prog was playing up and Windows started complaining - blue screen. So I uninstalled and I'm using 5.5.

hum, don't need any stuff most of the time. using linux/bsd. when on windows using firefox, avg and zonealarm, no need for anything else.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,949 ✭✭✭SouperComputer

when I have to use windows:

    NOD32 AV
    Hitman Pro
    Kerio Personal Firewall
    MS antispyware

thats it, of course a ghost image, just in case. user profile resides on a server, so no need to worry about looing docs if I reimage.

I try to use the mac or linux whenever I can TBH
