I have a three year old iBook G3-600,dual usb, which I'm passing on to my younger sister for college work. What I'm wondering is if I install Tiger on it (it's currently running 10.1) will this slow the system down dramatically. Its not the fastest as it is.Any advice would be appreciated!

It's highly likely that it would be slowed down. I would upgrade to something a bit more stable than 10.1. The most stable in my opinion would be 10.3.9, but that would probably slow it down as well. I have found that Tiger suffers from some minor graphical glitches when it is run on a lower spec machine, especially iBooks and Powerbooks.

I run 10.4 on an iBook G3 500 and it's great.. definately better than earlier versions. I'd format the disk first though. My only speed complaint is Safari when using this site, it crawls along! On other bulletin boards it's fine though.

More RAM would be much more important than the processor speed.

generally speaking, OS X has gotten more efficient as it has gotten older.

Tiger to a lesser degree. Panther would be fine for sure, 512MB ram is always a good idea though
