[Request] Credit Cards

I am looking to get a credit card for online purchases, i plan on using it only when i have the cash so in other words i would use it then pay off the money on it a few days after. I was looking at the tesco credit card someone told me that if you get tesco's card you don't have to pay the annual €40 government levy fee.
    Anyone got any ideas?

i am a college student as well if that has any advantages when getting a credit card?

Tescos did that a long time ago, I think the offer is gone now. As a student you may get some deal though.
I use mine like yours too, never have to pay interest so I stuck with my own bank since fees were not an issue and I can pay it off and check online easily.

    the levy is a disgrace...

If you use pigsback this could be good

    http://www.pigsback.com/offers/385494411/default.asp

    * Plus 2,000 PiggyPoints
    * Plus 1 PiggyPoint for every €1 spent

    That would be this

I use a BoI Amex Blue...they give you back 1% on your spending so if you use it to buy 4 grand of stuff or more per year it cancels out the levy (which is a f*cking joke BTW, thanks Mc Creevy).
The only downside is that you can come across certain shops that don't take it (though 99% of online shops do)

My set up with the credit card might be a bit unusual.

My wife, son and daughter all have cards registered to my account so that is a total of 4 credit cards and we all chip in for the annual government levy.

The most important thing is to pay off the balance fairly quickly and thereby avoid interest charges.

When my statement arrives a family meeting is hastily called and all the various purchases are identified and everyone pays for what ever they ordered the previous month.

This system works for me and before I forget it is MBNA and I have to say I never had any problems with them.

So how long does the money have to stay on the card before they start charging interest?
If i got a card and paid it off a couple of days after each purchase(i won't be using much, just online stuff) would i be charged interest?

Around about October 7 or 8 I will get a statement out for all the purchaces/transactions I made during the full month of September. So long as I pay in full before October 28 I will not be charged interest. It is always wiser to pay before the 20th as it can take a few days for the payment to be processed.

What I do is write them out a cheque as soon as I get the statement. That way they have payment no later than about the 15th of the month and therefore no interest is charged.

As I said I have an MBNA credit card but most of the big credit card companies will give you free credit facilities up to the end of the month following the month you made purhaces etc.

A word of caution though. If you withdraw cash from an ATM with the credit card or write a cheque from one of the many blank cheques they force upon you (I burn the ones they send me) you are charged interest daily right away from that date up till the date they receive your payment

The Business/Economy/Finance forum had details recently of a new VISA especially designed for online purchasing. It generates a special number for each transaction.

It also appears that you can now go into certain financial establishments and get an instant Prepaid/ VISA credit card (for whatever amount you wish) which can then be used for online purchasing using a VISA credit card number, especially handy for those with poor credit ratings!.

Visit the above forum and search or ask in a new thread.

    P.

I think AIB have the same and if memory serves me right I think this system was actually designed and marketed by AIB

They've had Visa Checking Cards in the US for years. Basically they work everywhere that Visa does and just take the money from your current account. There's no levy and no charge for using them.

I don't know why they don't bring this system in over here. Well I do actually, the banks wont make as much money:)

    charges:
    4.1 What is a 3V Voucher™ going to cost me?[back to top]

It will cost you €5 to purchase a 3V Voucher™ regardless of the value of the 3V voucher.

4.2 Are there any other charges?[back to top]

Other charges arise in the following circumstances and these are:

But with something like that i wouldn't be able to have a paypal account because your CC number would change everytime you buy a new one

Not sure myself. Theres a possibility your card account would always remain the same but you would be given a different "transaction number" each time you would purchase online for example

I'd be interested in finding out for sure myself.

Usually, there's a period of about 30 days allowed where you won't be charged interest. So if you pay off your balance after a week then you won't be charged interest.

Interest rates vary from card to card, starting about 9.9% with PTSB's ICE Visa card, all the way up to 16/17% for other cards.

    DC.
