Airliner Approaches For Emergency Landing

This is just happening live on Sky News right now.
The Jet Blue Airbus 320 Airliner left Los Angles on route to JFK New York not too long ago, shortly after take-off the pilot reported a possible problem with the Landing Gear. He made a fly by the air-port so that experts could make out the extent of the damage, Right now the place has just finished a fuel dump over the ocean and its reported the nose linding gear is some 90deg out of line. The main rear landing gear is safe and its though the aircraft will make a somewhat bumpy- yet same landing.

    NEWS:
The crew reported problems with the plane's nose gear. The nose gear of the Airbus 320 is turned at a 90-degree angle.

"I've never seen a situation like that," said Donn Walker of the Federal Aviation Administration.

The plane left Burbank Airport for New York's JFK Airport. It was diverted when the crew reported the problem.

The plane is circling over the Long Beach area at between 4,000 and 5,000 feet. JetBlue officials confirmed at 5:20 p.m. that the plane would be in the air for at least another 90 minutes.

Jon Dudley, a commercial airline pilot, said the crew will probably attempt to use as much fuel as possible before landing.

"Eventually, the loss of airspeed causes the nose to drop," he said. "The pilot will hold it off, then guide the nose down. He'll come in as slow as possible."

Airport personnel are standing by, awaiting the arrival of Flight 292. Emergency crews have been dispatched at LAX and Long Beach Airport.

JetBlue Officials said the plane has 139 passengers and a six-member crew.

Jeff Reeb, of the Long Beach Fire Department, told NBC4 that his department has 35 units and 65 people deployed at the airport. The Long Beach airport runways, the longest of which is 10,000 feet long, have been cleared of commercial aviation traffic, Reeb said.

the guy on sky was talking about the question of there being injuries....0_o.

it was basically a normal landing. Obviously scary for the passengers, but i can't see how there could have been injuries.

The Sky guy is on his own in front of the camera and has to fill airtime with something. So he just trots out whatever pops into his head. Believe it or not, CNN provided good coverage once Larry King came on air.

Well done to the crew. Came to a stop with the remains of the front gear on the centreline! A bit scary I'm sure, but I don't think anyone in the know really expected a bad outcome.

I'm ashamed to admit it, but even the remote possibility of a crash makes for rivetting TV. I should have been in bed ages ago.

Ok I wasn't watching so maybe I'm just missing something blindingly obvious.... but how did they not notice that something was 90 degrees out of line from where it should have been before they took off? They do check the plane before taking off. I'm thinking I shouldn't have read this when I'm off on a plane this afternoon

I haven't watched it either but I assume that the problem occured AFTER takeoff, possibly while retracting the landing gear.

Anyone else find it funny that the pilot was the first person off the plane?

Fair play to the pilot. Any landing you walk away from is a good landing. I'd say he was ****tin' himself

passengers said they were watching the breaking news, of themselves, on the plane.

    how cool is that!

pilot did a great job, he'll be the talk of the pilots lounge.

    Pretty darn scary I'd imagine.

"It appears the plane has a problem with the landing gear, it is going to have to attempt an emergency landing. The fire department are ready and waiting. Stay tuned..."
