ftp stands for file transfer protocol, its a way to transfer files over the internet, it uses port 21 (internet comm port thingy). You can download FileZilla which is a free ftp client. In order to use it you will need to know your ftp address (ftp.yourdomain.com), your username (given to you by your hosting company) and your Password (also given to you by your hosting company). Thats about it. You can also get a plugin for ftp usage with firefox, or you could just type in ftp.yourdomain.com into IE and see what comes up. Filezilla is your best bet.

I'm not going near the proxy server question you asked !

ftp = File Transfer Protocol for (Obviously) transfering files online to a server. There are many ways to do it, either via telnet, cmd prompt or the simplest way by use of special programs like ws_ftp or smartftp.
I use smartftp myself and it's is very user friendly (www.smatftp.com), simple set-up proceedure and you can be uploading/downloading/creating folders etc etc in half an hour.

You will need an online server or host and whilst theres plenty of free ones about, you can adequately get small 'User Accounts' for 50-80euro. These are around 30mb, 1 sql db, 1 e-mail, 1 domain name, 500mb-1gb transfer pr month and imo better than the freebie servers for small personal sites.

Most just use free hosts though and put up with advertising. You can use places like .tk who will provide you with free dns forwarding. They load pop-ups now though and your site is displayed in a frame under www.your choosen name.tk

I'm sure I wrote a basic tutorial with screen shots one time - meant to post it at my forums but it never got done - I'll see if I can find it and send you a copy but theres plenty of support at smartftp anyway to get you going...

    :)

know nothing about proxy stuff though *coughs*

Web proxies are used to speed up internet access. Normally when you want to access a website, your computer will ask that website to send that file. If you are using a web proxy, your computer will ask that computer if it has that file (for example: http://www.google.ie/images/hp0.gif), if the web proxy doesn't have it, it'll download it as normal and then send it to you. If you ask for the file again, it'll send that without having to redownload it again. It can make web browsing faster.

That is not what he was asking about. What he was asking about is certainly more 'dubious' and can be answered by a google search.

Anonymous proxys have lots of legitimate purposes, and are no more illegal than free speech. The scienologists have a particular hatred of anonymous proxys for this reason.

The difficulty with such remailers though is that be definition they must be free (billing details...), thus they come and go.

I think you will find lots of useful information at:
    http://epic.org/privacy/tools.html

(not a dodgy site of any description but an NGO in Washington DC...)

He wasn't looking for an anonymous proxy to browse web pages - he wanted an anonymous remailer. And did not specify any good reason.
That useful information, and so so much more could have been found if he wasn't too damn lazy.
An anonymous remailer and a fool is a combination for spamming
