Attic Conversion

A colleague at work has recently asked me about attic conversions, as it is something he is considering. From what he has said, it seems his roof was made using trusses rather than a cut roof. As his house is in a four year old housing development, my guess would be that the developer didn't go to the expense of putting in the more expensive attic trusses. If this is the case, has he got any other options.

    Hi Carb,

The existing roof can be upgraded to suit an attic conversion, most developers never fit truss roofs that would be equal to an old type cut roof unless asked to.

The whole idea of using roof trusses is to keep the costs down while staying within structural guidelines laid down by a Structural Engineer and the building regs.

Thanks Pete. What would upgrading the roof involve, and would this add a significant amount to the cost?

    Hi Carb,

Basically steel supports and extra timbers, the cost will vary between detached, semi, detached with good side access and a terraced property.

A Structural Engineer or Architect may be needed depending on the bearing the steel will have and if a dormer is being installed or Velux roof lights.

It's not as unusual as it may appear.

    Question>
On a small detached bungalow (20'x34') height in centre of attic is approx 7'10'' . Would a conversion be a good idea. We need one more bedroom.
Would it be expensive to do or would a room at the side of the house work out cheaper. Any guide re price would be great.
    Tks
