Last wk I started playing sudoku..
Because my cousin bought those puzzle books..

It seems like a stupid idea at the time..
    She got me to try..
Soon after I finished one, another came along..
    Next thing I know..

I end up doing the ones in the paper and two days ago I bought those puzzle book myself..

I don't think this adiction is good for me..

    Anyone have similar experience??

Absolutely. A friend had one about 2 weeks ago & explained it to me. I tried it for a few mins, got hooked. I now have a book of them in my bathroom. :o

it's horrible for a few weeks there i just couldn't get enough downloadin them off the net at work and everything was really bad then it just stopped and i haven't felt the "need" since. i guess once you give up coke (as in coca-cola!) you can give up anything!

My house is full of the puzzles downloaded from the Irish Times, and weirdly like another poster, most of them are in the bathroom.

Out of curiosity I just tried to do one for the first time...
    Got about half one done.

    Nope. Don't get the fascination.

Its not a fascination, its a challenge.
It proves i'm better than you! :p

    How does one play it?

Since I've got a growing addiction to minesweeper (I can now do the hardest level in less than 5 mins), it can only be an improvement!

the board is 9x9 cells which made up a total of 81..
the 9x9 cells is split into 9 of 3x3 cells..

For every row of 9 cells, it has to contain number 1-9
meanwhile every column or 9 cells also have to contain number 1-9
And the 3x3 cells also have to have number 1-9
which all of this does not over lap

Go to the link carbonkid posted earlier www.sudokushack.com and you'll see what i mean

Challenge in minesweeper isn't the time - if you get lucky and get a fair board you can clear it quite quickly - but its the ones where you spend 2 minutes calculating that one corner-opening click that keep me coming back...

Yeah definitely. I got seriously addicted to minesweeper and freecell one summer working in a lab. While we'd be waiting for the experiment to finish collecting data we'd play freecell, everyone playing the same "game".

Puzzles can get very addictive. Personally my favourites were always the books of logic puzzles.

    Very enjoyable.

I'm in the process of making a visual aid in Illustrator or Flash to speed up my completion time as it's still taking me an hour to finish the Times' fiendish ones.

i really hate it when it comes down to the last 2 squares where one of them is a bomb in the hardest level..

    It's do or die..

I'd prefer a crossword, but Sudoku is good for a change every so often :)

Anyone addicted or just intersted in the puzzle should check out this months BBC Focus magazine. It has a whole article on the puzzle, where they came from and other stuff about magic squares etc.

Is there ALWAYS a mathematically certain way of working them out or is there points where you have to guess one or two? It can be frustrating looking at one for an hour at certain points & not getting a single extra number.

not as far as i know. I can, more often than not, get the times Hard one done, but you certainly may need to take a break from it after a while.

It's all practice. There are certain conventions that you will find yourself discovering...almost a gut instinct kinda thing that really is just logic with a bit of speed...

Take for instance the screenshot Ive attached. Ive been completely stuck on it for an hour or so. Can you see anything I cant? Im not asking you to help or tell me what goes where. Just whether theres something there im not seeing (without guessing)

well - for instance in the left middle grid, the row which reads (blank)(one)(blank) shoudl be (two or nine)(one)(two or nine). However, we have a nine in the right hand row of the grid above (top left set) in the line (four)(blank)(nine) so we know now that the middle row of the middle left row should read (nine)(one)(two)...

I'm finding myself doing at least two a day. I'm not addicted though, I'm just bored at work!

lol. Thats the very think I spotted 2 mins before I clicked back on this thread. I love this game, it can be very gratifying to be completely stuck on one & everytually work your way out.
