I have been searching for Ages through all the forums for the Harry Potter Forum, I have not found it.

My suggestion an A-Z of all the forums on this site.

Also can someone show me a link to that forum.

    Link

    Arts > Sci Fi/Fantasy > Harry Potter

    A-Z might be good though...

    They're just categories...
I believe he wants the forums in A-Z forums, not the categories..

That Wiki page gives the A-Z, it just needs to be updated. Perhaps some Kind soul could do it...., look I've already generated an A-z List..

Heh, closest I got was this:

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/archive/index.php/

I started thinking about writing a program to remove all the extra characters generated to give the list a structured appearance, after which it would simply sort... then lost interest. A curse.

For my next trick, I'll write a short script that outputs the above list, but formatted with wiki markup.

    Later today....

Agreed - A to Z would be neat as a dropdown dealy. Get to it Seamus :)

Sure; you'll be awarded the star as soon as you have a thousand posts (just to make sure you're not evil).

    First Draft.

It's conforming to the "Board:$board_name" convention, hence why many links are appearing in red. Private forums aren't included.

My lord... did you copy all the forums or did you use some sort of computer-person style script...

Cool, as a matter of interest how did ya do it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68,317 ✭✭✭✭seamus

I already had the list, in alphabetical order (above). I did that with Excel. Then with PHP, I read that list in, and printed the next letter of the alphabet with wiki formatting, every time it changed. It prints each forum name, with wiki link, as it reads them in. I also had the script start a new column in the table every ceil(count($list)/5) forums.

Then I copied and pasted the output into the wiki. I can paste up the code here if you like, but it's a hack together.

I've done similar stuff with notepad and C.

Do you know of any way to modify biki pages with repetitive stuff. Something like add categories to the bottom of the pages? It's probably a bit complex for that, but there's a lot of boring repetitive stuff to do in the biki.

Aye, I agree. Haven't a clue about wikis, and server-side automation. I've never installed/maintained one.

Not sure if I understand your question, but is it something like this:

    PageList(regex:^Boards/.*)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,421 ✭✭✭Steveire

    I don't understand that code.

Sometimes it makes sense to go to each article in a category and add a piece of information. For example, go to each user page, and add each user to the category of users. ie add
    [[category:users|USERNAME]]

to the bottom of each page.

Is there a way to make a computer do that? What if i had a list of all pages i wanted to do that with? would that make things easier?

That si because the page you linked to is an index of forums listed in the biki, not an index of the boards forums. These pages are there should the moderators or the users of the biki decide to write information about any of the forums example [wiki]Personal Issues[/wiki]

also the wiki requires that users add stuff to it at any time. hence it is always a work in progress.

here's the list. You just have to clean out the irrelevant code and alphebetise it Sandals. Shouldn't take you long etc.

yes of course, that's why i suggested it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68,317 ✭✭✭✭seamus

    OK..

You have a list of all the forums. So you have a look, go "Oooh, I didn't know there was a <insert board name> board here". Then you use your brain, think about where it might be (there may even be a wiki article telling you where it is), and use the nav menu to go there.

    Not too difficult is it?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,299 ✭✭✭Sandals

No it's not difficult, but it would be far better if I could just click it, I use my brain too much as it is, by the way chill - out a bit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68,317 ✭✭✭✭seamus

Don't worry about me; I'm so laid back, I'm vertical.

The A-Z actually has a better use than serving as (yet another) link to every forum on boards.

It's hard to find some forums, when searching is disabled,

Actually, I see what you're saying. Perhaps it's just me, but I don't see how it's hard to find a forum if you know what it's called and what it's about.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,299 ✭✭✭Sandals

eg. Harry Potter forum, or Photography or Satelite or Tcd they all took me a while to find at first.
