Information is still thin on the ground so I don't know whether this is wide-area wireless or just hot-spots, but yes, Google is apparently doing WiFi on the ground now, in San Francisco. Over a VPN.

An anonymous reader writes "Google is actually (confirmed!) rolling out their wifi network, first in the San Francisco bay area (see the FAQ for details.) They are also including a Secure Access program for use in conjunction with this. So far, as per usual, it's in beta, and only for the San Fran bay area. Soon the entire US, perhaps??"

This might not be related to the original topic but has anyone looked into getting the Google Wifi Mesh network systems? I have fibre and the main router sits in our home office but our tv room is far away where I set up another router (used as an access point) and have powerline adapters too.
The main router does tend to drop signal every now and again even though it says it is up and connected, and I was wondering would the Google Wifi be a much better fit for our home network.

It's getting pretty good reviews too:

Mesh doesn't work well. It sacrifices the speed of your network, adding a repeater will half the throughput of your wireless as it shares the same frequency. This is fine if all you do is some light browsing but most of us want the best speeds possible for streaming.
