Graphics display problem

Right, I need some help. In the past few days my Radeon 9800 Pro has started acting up. I've started to see some severe artifacts on screen, not just in games but everywhere, including the desktop. This makes viewing anything really diffficult, even typing this is tough. It began a few days ago around the time I upgraded to the 5.8 Catalysts. I can't remember if the artifacts happened before or after I upgraded, but to test I went back down to the 5.3s that I was using, but with the same result.

I've had this card just over a year now and I did overclock it a small bit at the start. I thought initially that it was overheating so I used RivaTuner to pull back the clock speeds. Strangely this only works sometimes, If I pull the clock speeds right back to minimum, some, but not all artifacts would disappear. However at the moment I'm on 5.7s and pulling the speeds right back does nothing to ease the problem. See the attachment for a pic.

    Has anyone got any ideas?

Underclock it with Ati tool to see if that makes a difference.

Check your heatsink is still working as its a 9800 pro it could be 2.5 years old.

Well underclocking with ATI tool made things worse and I had to take the card out and put it in again to get things back to a reasonable level.

Actually I found the invoice for this card from komplett and its dated 2003! I had no idead it was so old.

Any other ideas? What could it be?

I think the fan on it might be starting to go.

first of all try to change your display settings
maybe there is some problem there
if that does not work then you check your display card that might have gone corrupt
if it has got corrupt buy a new one and install it

Strange thing is, the artifacts completely disappeared a few moments ago. The screen is fine now. However, this happened before so I'd say they will come back soon or after the next restart. Strange....?

The fan is running, but I dont know if its at top speed, are there any programs available to tell you the temperature and fan speed of ati graphics cards?
