I've heard that people living in Kildare close to the K Club are being offered ridiculous sums of money to rent their house for the week of the Ryder Cup by US agencies. Sums of $30,000 have been mentioned.

If you live in the area I'd check it out.

    I heard that also.

I would also offer the people transport to and from the KClub.

    Will make more money also.

They money you make you can send the family on holidays for the week and you live in a mate's house for a few days.

I am sure they will give a big tip at the end of it also.

    Money to be made.

Houses "one hour away" (or in real time about 3 hours away with our traffic) are going for some very stupid prices. And some of the ones right next to it are going cheaper. Its madness!

There are some house commanding $30k - $50k but they're not in our league.

CBS TV has rented one house for $100,000 but it has 12 bedrooms & 4 acres and its a stones throw from the K club.

More realistic for large house (2500 sq ft +) you can expect 3,000 - 4,000 for the week if you're within reasonable distance from the area. - Other idea is to do a house swap and have them pay for your flights as the added value - e.g. free holiday & your house is being looked after!!!!

Jesus for that money I'd do it. Would City West be too far and do you register with an estate agent or something.

The government, quite rightly, takes alot of stick for 'rip off ireland', but something like this is an example of how the population truly has embraced the "take 'em for everything you can.." approach to life.

Don't agree there. You go over to the States in 3 years time for the next Ryder Cup and see how much accomodation is around the event. Sure if you even go on holiday to any country in the world notice prices of accomodation, drink, food, etc at peak tourist times then compare it to the winter months.

It will be interesting to see how quick the properties at this link http://www.therydercuprentals.com/ get rented (removed from the list). It is one thing to offer your property at 20K for a week but will people pay that, i think not !

Ah yeah 10k is a bit much alright for a week. Suppose there's no harm in asking. Personally I would be looking for about 1500-2000 for the week. Has anyone actually done this?

But if you have a 5 bedroom house, it can probably sleep 9 people. If they all pay 1000+ euro, that's 9000+ euro. Seems reasonable to me considering
I paid 1000 euro for a standard enough hotel in the states recently for a week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,140 ✭✭✭✭TheDoc

outragous prices i have read. And sure I would think id jsut drive up instead of buying acomodation.

But if your talking bout living there like, for golf, on top of that you have a crazy subscription. K-Club is the msot over rated and over price course in Europe without a doubt. Its for the tourists. A good head and a golfer who knows anything bout golf knows to stay clear of it unless your getting a mad reduction or somehting.

Yeah but I think if you take in more than 8k you have to start paying tax on it. So someone in the area told me...

    Hey I'm living in Naas.

I've heard a lot of buzz about this, I thinking about doing it myself, although some of the prices are to good to be true, has anyone had any experience with this? Can anyone recommend a website to advertise on?

I'm not so sure about that, something to look into alright.

FYI it's €69 to advertise on www.rydercuphomerental.com if you upload the photo's & info yourself........

I put my house up on one of the sites too (although I ended up doing my own site, so I prob shouldn't have bothered). They suggested that for the duration of the Ryder Cup, a 3 star hotel will be charging 150-200 per person per night.

My house is a 3 bed and will comfortably accommodate 5 adults, so that is 750e to 1000e a day. For a week, that works out to be 5250e at the lower scale and 7000e at the upper scale (or $6350 up to $8500). Add in airport transfers, the fact that my house is less than 4 miles from the K club and that I will be offering transport to and from the K club and a daily cleaning service then $7500 or so for the week doesn't seem too bad..

Thats some serious money there, buy another house or two and you wouldn't need to work for the rest of the year

I've got mine booked for 23,500 since last week and am dreading a call from the taxman. Hey can anyone help me? , if I'm a registered PAYE employee - how do I declare the extra income, or does anyone know the percentage?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,787 ✭✭✭prospect

    Adrian9
If you are in the 42% tax bracket you will pay 42% on the entire rental price. Same as getting a 23,500 pay increase.

Here's some information that might answer some people's queries that I've been reading.

1 - Insurance. Yes you do need it. It is advisable to contact your insurance company to let them know if you have rented out your home.

2 - Price. This seems to be the most contentious issue with all kind of figures being bandied about. On our website [ http://www.eventleasing.com ] the most popular houses/homes are those asking for reasonable rents. As a rough guideline - compare your house to a 3 to 4 star hotel and figure out how many people can stay. [e.g a three bed semi within 3 miles of the K Club. Could sleep up to 5 (2 double and 1 single). Should list for 3,500 to 7,000 to get interest with the lower number naturally being most popular.]The upshot of it all is that if you ask for a reasonable price, you will get interest - if you ask for outrageous amounts, chance are you will be left just asking.

3 - Where to advertise. Of course I'm going to say use our site :) But rather than just say how brilliant we are, I would advise you to do research before you spend any money with any site or advertiser. There are plenty of sites out there that offer different levels of service. We have collated a list of eleven!! You can see their web addresses and information about each one on our site - http://www.eventleasing.com/links.php - below each site is a link to it's Alexa Ranking, which is an independent traffic ranking website, so you can see which sites are most popular.

Hopefully this has been somewhat informative and answered some of your questions - if you would like any specific advice, you can contact me through our site.

    A.

Doesn't renting your house mean that it is a material change of use and therefore you would need planning permission

My advice to anyone who is planning to do this is to clear it up with your local authority; you could end up in court if you don't acquire planning permission

    Planning and Development Act 2000

    What change of use?

Do the Yanks use houses for something different to us? i.e. Eating, drinking, sleeping, washing and shi... going to the toilet in.

What I mean by that is

You are effectively earning an income from renting your house and it becomes a business. There have been several cases where people have rented their houses without planning permission and have been taken to court over it.

My best advice is to consult your local authority informing them of your plans to rent your house; it could end you up in court for not getting planning permission

Never heard of this either. It's a short term rental lease. If that was the case every landlord in Ireland would have to apply for this planning permission. The only concern I would have is that it would be seen as an investment property and when selling you may have to pay CGT, but am not too sure on that.

I have been to Ryder Cup Events in the US. Hotels go up slightly but there is no ripping off like what is going on here. There is reasonable accomodation a little farther out of the immediate areas. The price of food and drink does not go up around the area either.

Well we will have to agree to disagree. A quick search gives me the following example:

House for rent in Oakmont for Us Open '07 = $5000 a day (5 day minimum)

    http://www.eventleasing.com/events/golfusopen2007/propertydetails.php?property_id=A001073

House for rent at the moment Bethel Park 9 miles away (1 bed less) = $1500 dollars/month.

Lets be honest it happens everywhere :)

Does anybody know of an agency renting houses but doing the "selling" themselves if you know what I mean??

Any sites I look at require you to do all the negotiating yourself - ie. They don't really care whether you rent your house or not once they've got your fee for advertising your house.

I'm looking for a site that will advertise my house for free and 'chase' a client for it and then take a percentage of the rental income. I think there might be such an agency in Naas??

Hey I thought I would bump up thid old thread to see if anyone actually went thru the process of renting out their house in the end and also to ask how it all worked out. If there is already an active thread please feel free to move my query to there!

I am thinking of doing this myself for the duration of the Solheim cup and would really like to know if it is as lurative as it seems. I have a large 5 bed detached home within 20 mins of the course.
