Ripwave is now available for 18.95 a month with no contract( well 30 days notice). Is it worth it.

Does anybody know if it is any good.
I know its only 512k but thats usually not that bad.

I had Ripwave for about half a year last year. The signal strenght was always very low and remember the contention ratio is quite high (48:1) so the 512kbps was sometimes as low as 10kbps. I finally got rid of it and swithed to ntl which I'm very happy with (if you can put up with the helpline) It has a low contention ratio (17:1) I'm on the 2mb option (€35) but there is a 1mb for €25. Not sure if you need ntl digital though.

This is a good site for comparing.

I had it for about 7 or 8 months and had nothing but problems with it (live in D8). There was never a day where the signal wouldn't cut out for long stretches. It got to the stage where in the evening or weekends I would be looking for a non-blinking light just so I could run to the PC to send off a few emails, very annoying especially if you need it for work at all. I would never consider the Ripwave service I got from IBB to be 'Broadband'.

I moved from Ripwave to NTL a few months ago too and it was like when I first moved from from a dial up service to broadband, the difference between the two is incredible.

    Hi,

I got in Ripwave last week. Im not looking for full Broadband, but am happy for VOIP to work on it. I had trouble in the upload direction, with people hearing me. I used a headset there last night and it worked fine. Although the Broadband speed at the time was 18kBYTE/sec roughly 150 kbps in the downlink direction.

During the week though the speed dropped to 8KBYTE/sec( 64kbps). The next time that happens i will see if VOIP is successful and will post the results. The quickest i have measure the speed so far is about 240kbps.

To be honest the reason i got it is cos its non contract, pay by month, hassle free set up.and hopefully a cheap alternative to a phone line.

I will let you know of any update

Ripwave is considered very bad for VoIP. VoIP requires a good solid connection, which you just don't get from ripwave.

BTW don't bother with Clearwire either, they block ports, so VoIP doesn't work.

Digiweb's Metro wireless service (requires antenna on roof) comes with a VoIP phone service that seems to work well enough in most circumstances.

Wired BB is better for VoIP, NTL cable BB is ideal as you don't have to pay any line rental. DSL also works well with VoIP, however you need to pay line rental then, which sorts of defeats the purpose. But there are some good DSL + line rental deals available from Smart and BT.
