i need a distro that I'd like to run in vmware that I can install one application I need to use for my research. something like damn small linux would be great - but not a live cd. just something so I can open the linux console to run the program. Command-line only could be fine as well.

would cygwin be a viable option alternatively? I'm not sure of its capabilities.

Damn Small Linux can be installed to disk,
though Vector Linux might be more versatile.

    It depends on your application.
Unless it's statically linked, you'll need to have
all required libraries available, and DSL is likely
    not to have them.
    ldd application name should help.
