Look im having real trouble connecting a new laptop to an existing network connection. The new computer has a little icon saying 'now connected at 100 mps' but whenever i try to open a web page it says it has no connection. Iv tried to check if the settings are the same as my existing computer and they seem to be. Iv also tried to google the problem but keep coming up with how to set up a network which is already done. Does anyone know if there are programs that need to be installed on a new comp to connect to a network?

    Can you ping the router?

    ping 192.168.0.1

Does the laptop show up in attached devices on the router admin page?

    ok try this.

    go into network connections.
right click on the connection , properties.
you should see a list of stuff like:

    client for microsoft networks
    file and printer sharing
    etc....

below that list is 3 buttons:
    Install---Uninstall
    Properties
    click install
    click protocol
    click add
    add the one that says:
    NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatable Transport Protocol

that will take a few seconds
    now it should work
if not restart and then it sould.

    Operating system? DHCP/Static address? Connection - USB/Ethernet?

Any security setup on the router?

<edit>Shiny, why would he need IPX for a TCP/IP connection?</edit>

    windows xp

    dhcp

i think ethernet because its def not using usb port

I tried that shiney and its still exactly the same. When i click 'connect' it brings up the dial up connection box (like my other computer does when it cant connect to the broadband)

also i dont know if its relevent but there is no security at all. Also i dropped my own laptop into college (im a student) to get completely re ghosted a few weeks ago. It was completely wiped and re formatted and just re connected to home network with no problems. So the network doesnt need special setting to connect to it

k Thanks for all the help everyone. In the end it was ridiculasly simple. In my 'internet settings' it was set to always dial for a connection. it ignored the fact it was already connected.

    feel sooooooo silly
