I'm looking for a PA system just for our vocalist. Is there any recommendations? I would be looking to spend 400-500 at most.

Good luck gettin a decent one for that price, not ta mention havin' ta get a mixer as well (unless you just get a power mixer and speakers rather than a power amp, mixer & speakers)...ever think of investing in a decent amp for 'em?

I just want one for a garage like, nothing spectacular. I'd be going the way of a power mixer and two speakers.

I disagree with the_obselete, Giblet. You could *easily* get a rehearsal / garage PA for that price.

I bought ours second-hand from Retropet for only €150. 8 channel mixer, severe wattage (no idea how much, but we barely ever have it cranked up past about 30%) and very reliable.

Check http://www.BuyAndSell.ie too. Always a few PA's being offloaded by bands, retired DJ's, small pub owners, etc.

Edit: Forgot to mention that they're passive speakers. But they're plenty loud!

    Buy this: http://www.thomann.de/thoiw6_the_box_pa502a_aktives_fullrangesystem_prodinfo.html

You can plug a mic straight into it, or buy a small behringer mixer if you want to use more than one mic through it. It's powered, so no poweramp etc required.

I'd recommend practicing with it in the monitor position (so don't bother with getting a stand), since that's both the best position to reduce feedback and is also exactly what you'll be facing in a gig situation.

Powered mixers are junk, tbh. They have no point. A powered speaker is at least convenient and well matched. A powered mixer is awkward to get speakers for, impossible to upgrade, and the heat generated by the amp seems to shorten the life of the mixer electronics. I have never come across a powered mixer that didn't have something wrong with it aside from one in a shop. [/rant]
