Chinese 4X4 - Euro NCAP Zero rating!

You do get what you pay for -

    from Times
The first Chinese car to be sold in Europe has scored zero — the worst-ever score — in safety tests.

The JiangLing Landwind was displayed at the Frankfurt Motor Show last week and is expected to arrive in British showrooms within months. It is already on sale in Holland, Germany and Belgium and has been billed as the vanguard of a new invasion of Chinese vehicles.

The two-ton 4x4 scored zero stars in crash tests last week by the ADAC, the German automobile club, which carries out tests for Euro NCAP. “It had a catastrophic result,” said a spokesman for the ADAC. “In our 20-year history no car has performed as badly.”

Testers calculated that a driver would be unlikely to survive a head-on collision at 40mph, and in a side-on collision at 30mph the driver would suffer severe head and chest injuries due to a lack of side protection.

“This car seems to belong in the 1990s in terms of engineering,” said Chris Patience, head of technical policy at the AA Motoring Trust. “We will wait for the official Euro NCAP results, but if it really is that bad we hope people will think very carefully before buying this car.”

With an expected £10,000 price tag, the Landwind is designed to rival cars such as the Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson, both about £5,000 more expensive. The Chinese maker plans to sell at least 1,000 models before July 2006.

    Mike.

The video and results from the crash test are already up on the Austrian motor club website. Don't seem to on the EuroNCAP site yet

    http://www.oeamtc.at/netautor/html_seiten/crashtest/leichtegelaendewagen/landwinddetail.htm

The passenger compartment deforms baldy and the front wheel is rammed right back into it. Still, as is the case with all jeeps, the Landwind will demolish any smaller vehicle it hits

Just looking at the styling of the car it looks like it might be based on the original Opel Frontera. If that is the case then it's no wonder it does so badly.

OK, we're not a communist state, and people are free to make their own choices, but surely there should be some degree of legislation for vehicles where "a driver would be unlikely to survive a head-on collision at 40mph".

I think it's worse that the damn thing is a 4x4 and weighs two tons. Cheap 4x4's are the last thing we need in this country - especially while we choke with traffic, and a Smart car will set you back the guts of €20k

Jesus, how is this death trap not illegal? Those prices are going to tempt many a person who doesn't have a clue or care about cars.

It's another good argument for taxing the **** out of 4x4s, unless they're taxed for farming. Make it so those that may buy it couldn't afford to keep it on the road. I'm sure it's a monster fuel guzzler too.

    Yep the lovely Landwind

Remember I put up the original post? Read about the test results early this week but with search being disabled I couldn't find it...

Not sure if they have tested it yet. The Dutch equivalent of the AA tested it and published the results a week ago. Crash it at 60km/h and you will die

    It is indeed, well spotted

I wish it were only two tons...

A legal loophole, apparently. If its weight was less than 2500KG, it would be banned in Europe. Its actual weight is 2510KG :(
