Ok I did this once before and lost all the data stored on my harddrive and had to re-install windows,
I am now trying to do it on my new LAptop and that can not hapen, do you know what I did wrong how can I prevent this from happening, it occured when I had to create the root and two other partitions.

Whilst creating the other partitions you obviously overwrote your existing Fat32/NTFS partitions for Windows. When installing Linux it is imperitive that you have free, unallocated space on your hard drive, and by that I don't mean free space on your NTFS partition. Once you have unallocated space, the automatic partitioning during the install will help you sort out everything you need.

When you install Mandrake it'll install automatically, just have about 10Gbs unallocated space.

ok I dont think it was like that when I installed it, I am now thinking it might be mandrake 10.0 does that vhange anything?

No, it doesn't change anything, and yes it was like that the last time, you obviously told it to just overwrite everything on your hard drive. Use a tool like Partition Magic to resize your existing NTFS partition to allow for at least 10Gbs of space, then just boot to the Mandrake CD or DVD, the setup program will do the rest for you, even install a dual booter to your Master Boot Record, which will allow you to then also boot to Windows, should you so choose.
