Is there a Gym in Trinity/Trinity Halls?
Is their an annual or an each visit charge?
also are their communal showers? (I don't like showering with other guys)

gym in luce hall on campus. Membership is 50 blips for the academic year...75 for the full calendar year.

or you can pay per visit at 1 euro a pop. but to rent a locker is another 50 cent...

oh and the showers are very communal. very communal indeed. a bit TOO communal for my liking.

are you serious?, ****, does anyone wear swimming shorts?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 55 ✭✭young nastyman

never really thought about it too much...but i think a few do...

i dunno if you'd get the whole "oh what's he got to hide?" vibe though, i doubt it.

ok I might just work out at home so.

    that's a bit extreme!

if you have any mates livin on campus you could ask 'em could you use theirs. and plus, you could leave your gear there thus eliminating the 50 cent locker charge!

You could wear swimming shorts. You could also wear a t-shirt with "I have a complex about other men seeing my penis" printed on it.

Nobody wears shorts in the showers; perhaps "young nastyman" doesn't wash after using the gym?

There's always an unwritten rule of "stay above the equator"!!!! Seriously though if you're that worried about it then just wear shorts or else go when it's not busy

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 55 ✭✭young nastyman

ah here, there's no need to bring my personal hygeine into this.
i always shower after the gym.

I know, but I am quiet shy and don't want people wondering Why I am wearing Swimming togs, I dont even like been seen wearing them, I had an operation when I was 14, and as a result My penis sticks out too far from my body making it look half erect (when it is not)

to be honest Sandal most people are too busy caring about what they look like themselves to be bothered checking other people out.

it will be weird the first few times but then you won't even notice it/ it will become 2nd nature. try going when it's really quiet at first and then once your used to it shower whenever you want wether it's busy or not.

Does the tcd gym compare to the Crunch one in ucd in any way or form?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,381 ✭✭✭snorlax

iv been to the one in UCD it's very high tech, has some really good equipement but then again it's alot more expensive then the tcd one

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 301 ✭✭thegloriousend

Like is there enough equipment to go round? Can you reserve equipment if not?

how do you mean ucd is high tech, what would I find there that I wouldn't find in tcd

its not possible to reserve equiptment in the gym (unless your the rugby team) but if you go outside of peak times its fine

from about 8-11 in the morning and 2.30-4.30 you shouldnt have any trouble getting a machine

avoid at all costs after 6 though as there is generally a diffrent sports club (rugby, rowing, etc.) there in the evenings

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 760 ✭✭✭ZWEI_VIER_ZWEI

Wait a minute? You mean that the rugby team are allowed to reserve equiptment but us lowly mortals aren't????

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,381 ✭✭✭snorlax

UCD has computor games and tvs that you watch when your jogging/ rowing etc.

i'm rarely in the gym but i've no recollection of seeing a sign saying "reserved for rugby team". what i am aware of is, a bunch of rugby boys come in, let's say 20 dudes, they just take over the place. as soon as one gets off a machine the other pops on, you can't get near the stuff, for all practical purposes it is reserved. who cares though? gyms are for fags.

OK that's cool :) I would be severely pissed off if it turned out that a bunch of rugby fools could just reserve equiptment to the detriment of every other club and student.
And while in general I would agree that gyms are for fags, since you can get just as fit on your own home with just a set of free weights and a bike, the Trinity gym is so cheap that it is worth it (I hate those people who pay 500 quid a year to become members of a gym just to maybe swim a couple of lengths and then spend the rest of the evening drinking coffee in a cafeteria.)

Fantastic! Cheap, and i can smoke in there while attempting to get fit! I just need them to install ash trays on the excercise bikes' handlebars and i am so there.

    /off topic:

Ah, freshers week, the time of year when the cobblestones ring aloud to the schoolyard taunts of 'gay', 'retarded' and 'insert whatever it is the kids are saying these days'. (remember when 'spa' was the insult of choice for the pre teen set?)

Ah memories. I think my personal favourite would be "a gay" i.e. you don't call someone and say "you're gay" , you say "you're a gay." "Tosspot" was another firm contender in our school. [sarcasm] Isn't it great to see how mature we've gotten since then :) [/sarcasm]

I know, sometimes you forget these people are 17 and 18. Oh god, what have I let myself in for!? I feel so old!!

Sorry to post on topic, I know that is generally frowned upon :p, but what sort of equipment is in the gym? And are their free weights or just machines?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

The showers in TCD gym are really good actually, good high pressure.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9 Diet_Coke

ARe you serious? The showers in Luce. Ok, afaik, there are 2 male dressing rooms in luce. each with 6 showers. In one of the rooms, only 5 of the showers work and one of them cold. There are no buttons, but rather a sensor that doesn't obey the laws of physics. The showers smell like dead rats and this high pressure is merely reasonable pressure. The water, however, is rarely cold. And you're rarely waiting more than a few minutes to splash around naked with your sporting pals.

In the gym there are about 14 thread mills. about 8 bikes. 4 rowing machines. some step things. maybe some more of that girly stuff.

there are weights machines, leg curls, lateral press, pull up machine, squats, most of the normal stuff but no bench press machine (one of each).

Then there are 5/6 benches for doing ur free weights. There are loads of little dumbells (is that what they're called?). That's about it, the gym is ok because it _WAS_ free and at a euro a go, it's not that bad, Again, if a rugby or rowing crowd come in, or heaven forbid, the female rugby or rowing crowd come in, you may as well just go get a shower.

also, there are these big giant balls for playing with and some mats for lying down pretending to stretch/ab roll on.

Sorry to sound retarded, but is the gym open to the general public?
    Are there instructors?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9 Diet_Coke

No, it is not I'm afraid. There are instructors but I've never seen them do instructing, aparently you can book them for an introduction and a weights plan or something. The dude P, is sound, the auld one is bit narky and the young ones just have an attitude. Find a pal who used to attend trinity, get him to join (about 180 i think) then replace his face with yours on the card, cheapest gym in d2.

em, sorry to be an eager fresher, but just wondering is there any indoor pool open to trinity students?

    :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,163 ✭✭✭✭Boston

Yes there is, three euro, it's on townsend street, accross from the fire brigade station.

Also, Dude, half the other guys in the changing rooms will be nakid, it's not like they will be looking at you, cause it's so odd.

Does anyone know when the new Sports Centre is set to be finished? And are there any details available, other than the sadly-lacking tcd.ie/sport?

December 2006, last I heard. Though by December, you may well want to read "May".

The lift and that's about it. Friends of mine working there in the neuro labs during the summer had to take all their samples to the physiology building to do all their tests on it. Not even an ice machine in the building!

Huh? There's the walk-in freezer on the 4th floor!

    For all your cryogenic needs

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

Yeah but there's no ice machine for filling a little bucket with to put samples in while you work. Working in a freezer isn't good for you.
