Land Of The Dead Pt 2?

Has anyone read Empire magazine this month? There's a big article about George Romero and Land Of The Dead. And in it, he makes suggestions that he's thinking of making a fifth Dead movie, but it will probably be a sequel to Land of The Dead instead of a whole new story. He says that he planned on Land of the Dead being some sort of epic type story, and would like to flesh it out (these are my words by the way, the magazine is downstairs and I'm a very, very lazy person!). Well, if true, it doesn't say much for Land Of The Dead if it's not what he fully wanted. Anyone else read this?

Wasn’t too impressed with Down of the Dead, but I’m hoping Land’ is better.
Trailer looks good. i guess time will tell.

If you're talking about the 2004 Dawn Of The Dead, that movie has nothing to do with Romero's Land Of The Dead. The "2004 DOTD" is a remake of Romero's original DOTD. For all intents and purposes "2004 DOTD" and LOTD have nothing to do with each other. Romero is the original and best and I hope this movie is good.

I loved Dawn Of The Dead (the original). I have a worry though:

The difference between old zombie films (e.g. Dawn Of The Dead, Night Of The Living Dead, etc.) and more modern ones (e.g. the newer D.O.T.D. and others) is stark. Whereas the older ones have a good emphasis on characters and their human reactions to the problems posed by the zombies, the newer zombie films are more action, gore, guts and effects with sorry excuses for characters and the like. What I'm very worried about is that Romero will make Land Of The Dead like any modern zombie film and without his usual finesse. And the trailer only confounds my worry.

I haven't heard about a second Land, but I've yet to see the first one. I loved the remake of Dawn, but as the poster above me just pointed out, that was much more action-orientated. That's why I expect the new Romero one to be different.
The one thing I will say is that the fast zombies in Dawn scared the crap out of me. Anyone know what the ones in Land are like?

I reccomend when you go see this film that you remove the Dawn remake from your memory. Its not romero behind the camera and completely different in style to Land. if might affect your enjoyment of land because it stays with the old school styles

i kinda disagree with you, the remake of dawn wasnt as gory as the original

    eg:
no biker being slowly ripped apart & eaten

I wish that was true... It certainly used to be true. But the fact that the Dawn of the Dead remake was a far more enjoyable and accomplished film than Romero's Land of the Dead showed me that he just can't cut it anymore. If he does make a LotD pt2 I hope it's outstanding because that's what I wanted and expected Land of the Dead to be.

Land of the Dead was passable.. nothing more.. but yes the ending definitely sets up a easy sequel/direct continuation.

Tbh I'm going to see Land of the Dead tomorrow and it looks good - in a Resident Evil Apocalyspe kinda way.

Lets be honest, to those you havent seen it yet, doesn't it just look like the Romero magic has gone? It looks like bog standard generic zombie crap.

And come on.....15a?? Not only is it not 18, its not even 16's!

A Romero movie, with a 15A rating? The movie seems to be more of a cash cow then an actual faithful addition to the Romerp Franchise. Granted Romero films always had an emphasis on characters and development but with that as standard came terrific gore that was absolutely amazing and disgusting for the time. With a 15A rating, I'm sure its not gonna digust anyone but the little kiddies who can legally go to this movie if their parents bring them.

Looks shocking really. I'm sure I'll moderately enjoy it but I think I will feel Romero has let the entire Franchise and his fans down. :(

It's not as good because it aims so much higher and misses the mark.

Ratings have changed a lot over the years. Land of the Dead isn't really any more or less gory than either Dawn or Day. It's obviously considerably more so than Night of the Living Dead.

Saw Land last night. Not a bad show by any means, just not spectacular. Definately preferred Dawn remake.

Believe me, you won't be left wanting for more gore. Heads get crushed, zombies get decapitated, massive and bloody head/bullet explosions... the lot. It's one of the goriest films I've seen in the cinema in a while. How this didn't get an 18 in Ireland is beyond me. This new censor we've gotten seems to be wildly inconsistent - Million Dollar Baby was a 16s for chrissakes!

It's beyond me too. I'd have given it a "16" myself. I'm imagining, perhaps, that the censor figured the violence was more comic/fantastic in that there aren't really going to be zombies wandering around like that therefore the violence wasn't as "realistic" or in a realistic context.

However, "Million Dollar Baby" is far more conceivable and thus objectionable, in much the same way as headbutts are deemed bad by UK censors because they're more easily re-enacted.. Just a theory to try and explain it.

Yeah, I was going to see it expecting a really toned down version. I mean, I had seen a clip of
a guy having his stomach ripped open and his intestines eaten
so when I saw '15a' on my cinema ticket I thought it would be censored to ****. It was really gory.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

Yeah, this was extremely gory, I'd go with ioxys theory but regardless this film was very violent in an explicit way and to think that a ten year old kid could wander in if his parents gave him permission...

As for the movie itself, I'm not ashamed to say I liked it, loved it, for the most part. Zombie mayhem at its best.

Heres betting it will be 18 when released on video....

Enjoyed it but it didnt live up to my expectations. Plenty gory though and if the dvd comes out in some kind of uncut form it should be pretty cool.

It was a bad idea giving zombies the ability to think. Haven't seen it yet but when I heard that It kinda put me off the whole movie. Also from the clips i've seen it looks too "clean" not gritty like the old ones.

Oh, the remake of Dawn was poor. Very badly done I thought.

So far it seems people either love of hate Land Of The Dead, so I won't get into it.
Oh, the remake of Dawn was poor. Very badly done I thought.

You know, Dawn was one of the very few remakes I've actually enjoyed. Almost up there with The Thing and th 70's version of Invasion Of The Body Snatchers. Almost.

Now this is coming from someone who usually despises all remakes, and has been known to rant on this very board when he hears about the latest classic film on the Hollywood chopping block. But I have to admit, I really liked Dawn! Why? Because it's a completely different film, and very far removed from the original. In fact, if it wasn't for the shopping mall location, they'd be two totatally seperate films.

To my mind, this is how a remake should be done. Not a slick updating of a film with an established name to make some quick cash, but taking a different approach to an interesting premise. That's what Dawn Of The Dead 2004 does, the film-makers take a premise and add their own imagination. It couldn't be further from the kind of hack job remake like Texas Chainsaw Massacre, or the many, many remakes of Asian films that are cropping up now.

Indeed though, I've heard criticism that it was more of an action film, but personally I wouldn't call that a criticism as such, and I simply enjoy the film for what it is - A totally different film to the original Dawn Of The Dead.
