HL2 on dialup is going asking for trouble! The steam download is BIG.

And yes you can run it on two PC's. Only one at a time though (because you only have one steam account.)

how can i get around the dial up

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,382 ✭✭✭✭AARRRGH

Well... just pray your internet connection doesn't die?

OR (and this is what I'd do) bring your PC to someones house who already has broadband. Get all your downloads/updates done.

If you have a friend with the same HL2 package as you, you can just copy across their whole steam directory. Then when you log in do so with your own username/password. Works for the download edition anyway.

Oh it's worth it alright Headshot. Just do what DublinDude said and bring your PC around to a friends house who has BB.

IIRC the Steam and HL2 patchs aren't that big, just make sure you don't try and update CS: S.

anything is big when you are on dial up, believe me i've went from isdn64k to 56k (in process of upgrading to broadband) and even waiting for a 1meg file is unbearable, it takes approx 4 minutes for a meg on dial up so even if the download was only 30 megs (which i'm postive it's more) it will take 30x4 minutes which would be 2hours. a pain in the arse that would be...

it caches what it has so far, so you won't lose everything on a disconn

    I feel your pain.

I got HL2 for Christmas last and spent almost the whole friggin' day downloading the updates. I was on the verge of returning the damn thing. I have never been as infuriated with game as I was with HL2.

Then of course when you actually get it working......:D Well worth it.

I had a similar type problem so I just sold it on and downloaded a cracked version, works 100% without any net hassle required.

My computer seems to have bizarre problems with regards games, for example, I'm playing BF2 online at the moment, and after almost exactly ONE hour in any given server, a message comes up saying "There is a problem with your connection" and I have to restart BF2.

Before that I had the HL2 problem.

And before that....it doesn't seem to happen on older games, eg, I've played Sof2 and UT for hours on end multi no bother. But newer games for some reason I cannot comprehend seem to be plagued with bizarre problems.

Maybe a TCP-IP problem you have there MobileInfantry. What I did when I got similar problems on my old PC, was uninstall all the protocols for my network card (e.g. TCP-IP, QoS packet scheduling etc.) and reinstall them. Hey presto, worked like a charm..

first of all download microsoft antispyware and adaware and scan your pc for any dodgy programs..then update virus def and run a virus scan..steam is very susceptible to spyware and will cut out at the 99% mark..this is a well know issue..only way to avoid it is download a no cd hack going around..of course u won't be able to play it online but on dialup you wouldn't be anyway..play it safe and uninstall the game first and delete all folders if you want to..i ended up having to do this in the very end.
p.s. i'm betting that some tosser will come back and say don't use MS antispyware ..use something else instead..
don't listen to them..frankly it's the best thing out there and blocks about 99% of all spyware..

If its the standard fan that came with the dell it shouldn't be that loud. Its prob just worn out, replace it with a fan of the same size should only cost a couple of euro.

Well it's faulty then. Ship it back to Dell, that's not good enough on a two day old machine.

depends on the type of motherboard you have (i.e. what socket of processor it takes). When you figure this out, go to komplett.ie and buy an appropriate fan. I'm guessing as you've a Pentium 4 you've got a socket 775, in that case, go here

how can i find out motherboard ie socket of processor it takes

and is this the fan i should go for Zalman CNPS7700-Cu CPU-Cooler Socket 478/775/754/939/940

    ?

Read the documentation that came with the PC. Download Belarc advisor from the internet and do a systems profile to tell you what kind of motherboard you have. Buy any fan from that page I gave you as they're all socket 775 compatible (which is the socket I think you have).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,639 ✭✭✭Laguna

WHOA made a mistake there last two posts, I meant to say you have probably got a socket 775! I've got AMD processors on the brain you see., I've changed the link to the 775 fans/coolers...

so im going to give it back to Dell and demand ill have it back within 2 days

I think that returning it to Dell is probably the best thing to do HS.
The fan for cooling in Dell pcs is usually mounted on the back of the chassis. It draws air through a green plastic cowl/duct which is fitted between the fan and the cpu heatsink. This causes the fan to draw air through the cpu heatsink, up through the green cowl/duct and straight out the back. Saying to go to Komplett and get a fan is all well and good if you are talking about anything but Dell. The fittings of the Dell heatsinks and fans could mean that you may not even be able to use the Komplett fan/heatsink.
Another thing I have noted form my own experiments with Dells and non Dell fans is that regular sensor fans don't seem to register properly with the Dell motherboard, the fan's speed isn't detected properly and there is a fan failure error just before boot requiring that you press F1 to proceed. This is what I have found happens when the mobo of a 2400 is used with a non-Dell fan anyway, it is highly probable that other models behave similarly.

change of plan i might have to get a fan
so what fan will i get

    any advice duridian
and dont say bring it back to dell

no choice..more than likely you'll have to get a fan from dell as all of their plays are proprietary...best thing to do is have dell send out the fan to you..much cheaper for them in the long run..also i work in dell so i know what i'm talking about..

Have you made sure it's not the fan on the 6800, I've a dimension 5000 with a 6800 as my 2nd pc and the fan on the card reminds me of a helicopter taking off!

Some guy on another forum had similar fan woes.
    http://www.howtofixcomputers.com/bb/ftopic54126-0-asc-0.html

I still say get Dell to take it back and suss it out.[/S]
If you go about doing what the guy in the link above did you will void your warranty and Dell won't help you at all then.
