Anybody advise me on whats the best way to get cash for Tunisia- Travellers cheques? / Can you use your cirrus card to withdraw cash like here? / Or have your credit card in Credit?.Do most banks here stock the tunisian currency? (Ps I'm going to Port el Kantuoi)

    Thanks

    Hi there,
Just back from Port El Kantaou on Friday. Tunisian currency, the Dinar, is not available outside Tunisia as its a closed currency the exchange rate of which is set by the government. At the moment you get about 1.6TD for Eur1. You can get currency from your hotel or banks. You will need your passport for the banks as proof of identity. I just brought Euros in cash and kept it in the hotel safe and changed the currency as I needed it. ATMs are everywhere too. Not sure what kind of cards they accept though. It's a bit of a hassel changing the Tunisian Dinar back to Euros as you'll need your receipts (totally pointless) and you have to go to the bank in the airport before you go to departures.
Hope this helps!! Weather is gorgeous there now....

There are atms but they only take Tusisian cards only. The only options are euro cash or euro travellers cheques. Passports needed to change the euros to Dinars. Credit cards are only accepted in the airport duty free shop.

We used our credit card in our hotel (restaurants, bars) no problem...didnt need to try them out anywhere else but our Sunway rep said they're widely accepted form of payment.

Things must have changed now. Were you charged in Dinars or Euros?

Do they still shake you down for Dinars when leaving the country?

The prices we experienced were all in Dinars except in the airport duty free. You change your Dinars to Euros in the Airport (only place) and you have to have your receipts (like you could have gotten them from anywhere else but Tunisia!). One guy still had about 200TD and couldn't change them back cos he lost his receipt! I believe there was a limit to the amount you could change back some years back but as far as I know no limit exists now (so long as you have your damn receipts!)
