    Hi,
Just wondering is simply hitting the power button any real threat to a computers well being rather than going through the shut down process? I don't do it, but it would be handy knowing that if I wanted to, I'm not putting anything at risk.

    Any feedback appreciated:)

Xp and 2k and 98 save changes at the end of a process shutdown so its fine if you didnt save or change anything system related. Or install new software or hardware.

If you turned on pc went on net ,played a game then hit power to turn off it would okish. I wouldnt recomend it but it sort is ok. But alt tabbing is an easier way to hide your porn watching activities :D

control panel -> power options -> advanced lets you decide what happens when you hit the power button

i don't think theres any real harm in just pulling the power on the pc like that, unless you were doing something like for example partitioning

Its a very bad habit, shutdown the computer via the start->Turn off

angelofdeath-> DONT pull the power of you PC unless its totaly frozen(do you want bad sectors on your hard drive?)

I have it set so when i hit the power button it shuts down and nothing happens it just goes through a normal shutdown process nothing bad can come of it. But just hit it dont hold it in obviously.

well obviously don't do it all the time, what kind of impatient git would do that, i just meant that the likelyhood of it doing any damage is pretty small

Yes, but other os's dont react the same way. thats why you should do it the "proper" way

Well, the power button is fairly instantaneous, where as start shutdown takes at least 20seconds, normally more if the OS is finishing up closing programs or something, paging like theres no tomorrow *cough*XP*cough*

And waiting 20 seconds is a problem why? Also, more on topic, if you have external drives, you can really mangle them by slapping off the power, as XP needs to write crap to them before powering off, assuming you used them in that session.

it goes through a normal shutdown process when I push a power button, unless you push it and hold it that shuts it down after 3-5 secs, but this shut down is like pulling the plug while it's working

now I have my power button set to 'suspend"

the reason I ask is because when I go to Start Shut Down on this PC, it usually takes ages and allot of the time it has to "End Process" of a certain program or two, then I have to push the power button anyway when it says "It is now safe to turn off your pc" this can be pretty frustrating when I'm rushing out the door :( I use XP Pro anyway. I suppose I'll just have to time it better in future?? hehe.

Or fix the original problem.... ie the one which is causing the End Process problem. My god....

Why not ask about solving that problem instead of asking the stuff about the power button. Meh, your call.

ya can set those end task things to end automatically for one, IF you don't want to exit everything properly etc.
