    Hello All,

I am studying in L.I.T and I am doing a B.A in Informations Systems. I am in fourth year and have to write a dissertation this year. What I am looking for is ideas I could write about on new technologies that have a good base already, as in plenty of information. So if you will please bounce as many ideas off me as possible I would really appreciate it. All ideas are welcome.

    Thanks

    WDK

VOIP (skype/ google talk) would make an excellent choice

What about WiFi or 3G technology? You could discuss security concerns for either of those.

Excellent keep them ideas coming .

    VOIP + 3G or Wimax.

In short, mobility - there is so much going on in the mobile arena.

Will Wimax steal the thunder from 3G? Especially when combined with VOIP? You could look at convergence devices (XDA III, Nokia N91, Sony/Ericsson Walkman phone, etc.).

Erm, I don't know if this relates to the area of IT, but how about PTT (push to talk)? Its mainly to do with phones, and you could talk how it has benifits over normal speaking, and compression, etc. PTT will be on the Irish market next year sometime, but its massive over in the States. Texting never caught on over there, but PTT has (to the same extent as texting over here has). You could proberly go on about how the data packets wouldn't need a line between teh two phones, so it'd work out cheaper, and talk about security as well.

I am certainly loving the ideas but PTT I dont think wouldnt suit beacause its not 100% directed at the IT industry. The WiMAx is a goof idea but I am afraid it will be extremely popular, I am looking for something obscure like IPV6 which seems to be winning.

The current 'US vs Rest of the World' DNS issues, and ICANN?

If you're doing new technologies in general perhaps you could do a bit about how technologies are often superceeded by newer technologies before they really get a chance to catch on. And maybe a bit about how competing standards can prevent widespread adoption of new technologies (HD-DVD, BluRay etc)

I think one of the best technologies to do at the moment is either:

    Nano Technology
    AI (Artificial Intellegence)

Those are both tech's that are advancing and there is alot of info out there on them.

I have just completed my MBS thesis on Open Source software.

I know its not strictly speaking a "new technology" but its a really good thesis topic in general.

GIS is another area where there is a lot going on at the moment.

next gen DVD's. So much to write about there.....Storage capacities, technologies used, how current dvd's evolved, were decyrpted by a 16 year old Norwegian, etc. You could even hark back to the betamax v's VHS wars in the 80's to show how consumers are now wary of choosing a single format....DVD+/-RW...etc. etc. etc. etc..

You don't actually have to implement any software, right?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,679 ✭✭✭Chong

No I dont have to implement any software at all but it has to relate I.T

Next gen dvd's don't? It's all about data storage. Not films. :)

Edit: And yes, John Locke does in fact rule. :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,679 ✭✭✭Chong

Lol in regards to John Locke.

I like the topics like your Khannie, but will I be able to stretch a full dissertation out of this.

Also I like the GIS idea it sounds good and seems to have a lot of information out there on it.

BTW: If you have the option of doing some writing and some implementation and you're in any way a decent coder, you should probably take that option. There was a clear line in marks received between those who coded and those who didn't when I did my final year project. It was a comp sci. course, but I think it's good to blend research with some development.

There is alot topics floating around in my head and I cant seem to pick tbh , I am quite good at java but any ideas I have had I cant see anywhere I could implement a java program. My course is a BSc in Information Systems so maybe if I did it on GIS(Geographical Information Systems) that would be a quality idea.

For information systems, I'd imagine things like XML, open document formats, web services, AJAX etc would be a big thing (just look back through the last couple of weeks on slashdot for tons of links). You could also bring in about how computing as gone from mainframes with thin clients, to client-server and is now heading back to thin clients. Altough that's could be all a little cliched in IS at this stage, probably half your class would have similar stuff.

Ok alot of the things mentioned in the past few posts were done last year and I want to come up with something new or which hasnt been done yet. The only thing that has yet to be done is IPV6 which I feel is a good Idea but I am not sure what sort of approach to take, but I was thinking of going down the lines of topic of the evolution of IPV6. If anyone has any other ideas they would be much appreciated.

I did a (very short) presentation on GIS a few months ago. I'd be happy to send it to you ... its short but covers a lot and you might get some ideas. I'm also thinking of continuing some GIS research I was involved in 3 years ago mapping mining sites in the rainforest in South America.

PM me if you are interested in the presentation or a chat... I'll be happy to help if I can.
