Science vs. the Environment

    Hi Boards,

I'd hoped for more of a response from the Science group. Obviously the Greens have more interest but don't the science enthusiasts have an interest in the environment too?

Well I still need your help and want your opinions on preparing a viral email to issue during Energy Awareness Week.

I'm thinking of asking companies to support the environment by emailing their staff and then relying on staff to virally distribute the email.

    So...
    1. Visit CombatClimateChange.ie to show your support.
    2. Forward to friends and colleagues.
and I’m thinking of the following text:

Irish Energy Awareness Week starts Sunday 18th September 2005.

This year http://www.SEI.ie (Sustainable Energy Ireland) is launching CombatClimateChange.ie a new web site to help you understand what climate change is and how you can take action to combat it.

The web site is can been seen at http://www.CombatClimateChange.ie

To show your support for the Irish Environment we are asking that you visit CombatClimateChange.ie and forward this email to your friends and colleagues

By working together we can make a difference!

What do you think? Let me know.

Good idea, nice job on the site, but I think it'll be hard work pushing that mail. It might be an idea to mention in your mail that the site has tips on how to save loadsa money off your EBS bill - I think you need a bit of a hook to get people's interest.

The site itself is low on actual information about climate change. Most people would have heard 'some people say' that global warming is a myth. It might be an idea to address that, say that the aforementioned 'some people' are generally in the pockets of the oil companies. This could be supported by links to some news sources (e.g. June 8th The Independent UK - 'G8 Scientists tell Bush to act now or else' here OR Global Warming Hits Tipping Point last August in the Guardian- free article) that would carry more weight than links to activist sites. (Incidentally, one of your links, climate.org, didn't load for me)

On your front page, you are saying some things twice (e.g. the chief cause... the main cause...), maybe you could replace one of them with an energy saving 'tip of the day' and a click through.

I applaud what you're doing, but you're up against the problem that it's a story that people aren't that interested in. That's a pity, since it's probably a pretty serious problem.

Finally, I think you've been a bit speculative/sensationalist with some of the predictions, especially 'what climate change could mean for Ireland'. Where did you get them?

You don't mind me asking why this thread is called "Science vs. the Environment"? Most scientists quite like the environment.

    Exactly my thinking!

I was just having fun. I hope most scientists do appreciate the environment and that's why I am posting to this board.

I expect a great deal from the scientific minded. Discovery, imagination and laterall thinking, though I hate that term...
    Anyhoo...

I hoped that the Eco-aware science focussed could help me and who are you to fail!

    ;)

    Hi Edanto,

    Thanks for replying and supporting.

I checked the ClimateOrg link and it seems fine, let me know if you still have a problem and i'll check again.

We will be linking to articles in time. Still getting content loaded, so if you spot any new links that you think are worthwhile send them to me or to info@CombatClimateChange.ie

You asked where the information about climate change in Ireland was obtained; it's from the “Climate Change – Regional climate change model predictions for Ireland” report produced by NDP in conjunction with EPA, Met Eireann and SEI.

As per your suggestion we are going to change the "did you know" part on the homepage on a weekly basis to reflect one of the 10 energy savings tips.

Keep the faith and as it's energy awareness week do try to pass the word along to visit the site.
