AFAIK a doctor can't prescribe you any drugs if you're under 16 without your parent's consent. Morning after pill is a prescription only medicine in this country. I have no idea of the cost involved.
I'm unsure what the legal implications of an underage person going to a GP and asking for the MAP is - technically because you're under the age of consent this counts as statutory rape and the GP may be obliged to report it to the relevant authorities.

Okay I had a "Friend" who went through this a good few years ago now. She got a very good older friend to go to the doctor for her and get the prescription. I am not saying it was the right thing to do but, an unwanted pregnancy is just that. She had the whole lecture that it is not only pregnancy you need to be protected against but at this time you need to deal with one issue at a time. If you have any older friends you can trust get one of them to go to the doc and get the MAP for you. AFAIK you can get it in the Family planning clinic now as well?
    MPA
BTW I know some of you are going to think this is dreadfully irresponsible of me to recommend but you do what you have to do when the time comes.

i couldnt get the morning after pill yesterday cos the place was closed when i got there , and by the i have another chance to go there it'll be too late.

what i need to no now, is how long will i have to wait before i can take a pregnancy test?

    please reply asap thanks

The First Response pregnancy test can give you a result as early as 5 days before your period is due. However, testing that early reduces the accuracy of the result. They are about 20 euro in any chemist. Do that test, but don't assume that a negative has you home and dry. I would do another test the day before your period is due, just to be on the safe side. I think you can actually buy this test which has two testing sticks in it, so use one, wait until the day before your period, then test again.

    Best of luck.

This doesn't sound like great advice seeing as the morning after pill, like some other medications, isn't licenced for under 18s (presumably for good reason).

OP, in light of the fact there may be nothing else you can do between now and a pregnancy test, perhaps you should get some information on safe(r) sex, contraception and STIs. There are lots of links here: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=152605

You can get it under 16.

Most places aren't going to say "sorry love, good luck with the baby" if you turn up at their clinic.

Advising against it, in fact, as Victor has posted above, is certainly not good advice in any case. If you have had unprotected sex, or the condom has split, or for any reason that could lead to a pregnancy, you should immediately go to your local doctor or family planning clinic for an appointment. They will give the pill to you. Nobody wants an unwanted pregnancy, least of all your local representive in the field if they believe you could go on to pregnancy without it.

Of course, being wise about Safe sex is the key to avoiding this kind of hassle; having unprotected sex in the first place is both immature and irresponsible, and it more then likely will have consequences if you can't be bothered to think of them beforehand.

At least, it's a lesson learned now.

Calling it the morning after pill is a bit of a misrepresentation really. You can take it up to 72 hours after unprotected sex. The longer you wait, the less reliable it is though.

Go talk to your gp of FPC straight away!

The "morning after pill" is basically an overdose of the normal birth control pill. One pill is taken and then another 12 hour's later. Alot of girl's get quite ill but you gotta keep it down.
Do it ASAP before you run out of time. 72 hours and ticking.

    Dear Guest
There’s a new form of morning after pill that doesn’t have any side effects. The one your talking about is gone of the market.

    Dear Guest,

I know it’s late to say this, but I was talking to my girlfriend last night regarding your post, and she thinks that regardless of your age you can still go to the Doctors and he will issue you with the morning after pill, the resin she think the Doctor will issue the pill is because the Doctor is obligated to because of your request regardless of your age.
And he can’t inform your parents because of the client confidentiality claws.

So go to the doctor the talk to him anyway, I know from visiting my Doctor that he can’t issue any information about myself without my written consent.

    Take care.

thanks for the suggestion, but the morning after pill only works 72 hrs after youve had sex, and its been 10 days now so theres not really much i can do at the moment

What I did was find some doctor in town who I'd never been to. I lied about my age (was 15 at the time) and altered my date of birth and name on the paperwork. I was very paranoid. I know this won't be of much use to you know but any people with this problem in the future should just face the doctor and do it. It's better than dealing with a baby in 9 months time. Also read the instructions. You're meant to take 2 at a time. 2 in the first go, 2 in the second. I was an idiot and only took 1 in the first go and realised my mistake by the time the second lot was needed.

Take a test but be aware that sometimes stress can affect your periods. Also as you're still quite young your cycle may not be 100% regular yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,890 ✭✭✭embee

    OP,

do a test now. Try to get one which can predict pregnancy early, like the First Response kit. Its the one I used, and it came out with a clear positive result almost straight away. Alternatively, there is a test called the Digital ClearBlue test which will display on a screen either "pregnant" or "not pregnant" but as far as I know they aren't as accurate in early pregnancy.
Generally speaking you would be best to wait until your period is at least the length of its duration late (ie, if your period lasts 5 days, wait until you are five days late). That way if you are pregnant, the levels of the hcg (pregnancy) hormone in your blood will be higher and will give you a much more accurate result.

Best of luck one way or the other.

Do a test, but bear in mind that as you're under-16, your periods are probably still erratic. For confirmation, get yourself to a doctor.

take the test and see wot happens. sometimes, if you have sex when you're period is due, it can be delayed and held back. it happened my ex-gf a few months back. if he was on top it also increases the chance of this delay happening because the man can stimulate deeper.

Go take a test, asap. You could be late because of worrying and stress. I had unprotected sex before never took the MAP and I was scared ****less, I thought If I didn't know maybe it would go away, I was 3months late - took the test and 2days later I got my period again.

Don’t mean to be negative but sometimes the test doesn’t work right, to be sure you should go to a doctor or the well woman clinic, it’s all confidential. (Just to give yourself some peace of mind)…or phone then-

Yes it can be,especially if you are seriously stressed (which I was) and I was only 17 at the time so my Periods still hadn't properly sorted itself out. Its great to hear that you took the test and it was negative hope everything works out. :)
