my laptop died last month, so I've to fork out for a new one. I got offered this one in a shop today. Could I get opinions on whether it would be any good?
An Acer, Centrino Pentium 6 3.2 GHz processor
    512 RAM
    60GB hard drive
    dvd/cd RW
    XP Professional
    WiFi enabled

    for 1160?

I would also like recommendations for a laptop with similar spec if anyone can do so.Btw, I will not buy Dell.

Centrino refers to a set of technologies which includes a Pentium-M processor. The Acer, if 3.2GHz does not have a Pentium-M (or Pentium 6!!), but a Pentium 4.
The Pentium 4 isnt a ideal processor for a laptop. It is grand in a desktop where where power consumption and heat are less of an issue, but for a laptop a P-4 processor will mean dismal battery life and loud fans.

A Pentium-M laptop on the other hand may have a 4 hour battery life and have no fan whatsoever.

after my last desktop no more dell for me either :)
That sounds like a good deal to me.i bought my acer(similar specs as the ones you have put up) at christmas and it was nearly twice the price.
what graphics card does it have or does that matter to you?
    what speakers?etc.
what do you need it for?check out how good it is for the particular thing you need it for,if you have one.
all in all it sounds like a good deal as long as the rest of it isn't pathetically crap :)

My acer has a lot of fans but they are quiet.Impressed by that. The battery life does indeed suck but that is my fault because i didn't take care of it.I never use it on battery so i didn't bother.|If i had taken care of it the life would have been around three hours-which i think is quite decent taking into account the power consumption as mine is more of a desktop replacement.
