With my optical mouse my pointer disappears and reappears elsewhere every few minutes. It is a logitech USB mouse on W2K. The only thing I did recently was remove the thin 4 pads underneath it. One had fallen off and the others were filthy and making it hard to move. Would this have caused it? if so I could get some new sort of pads.

    or is it just knackered.

Just a thought, check to see if the snap to option in mouse properties is unchecked

I've a cheapy lidl one that does the same, if by dissapear and reapear you mean jump straight from one part of the screen to another ? It's wireless so it could be some kind of interference, but I think it's probably the cheap pad I'm using it on reflecting the beam in some funny way that makes it think it has moved. It never seems to happen if I use it on the desk or a bit of paper or something.

happens with my logitech too, maybe one a week (not wireless)
always sees to be when I'm trying to close a window the pointer just disappears, when I swirl the mouse in circles it reappears mid screen

    "snap to" is unchecked.
    It has a wire.
It does just jump from one place to the next. Annoying at first but a few time I was about to click somewhere and it jumps and closes something or selects a cell I do not want etc, really pisses me off then.

My mat has a silvery finish in some places, but I have the mat a few months with no problem. I will go back to my trusty A4 paper page mat and see what happens.

I will let you know, thanks for the advice.

Try a different mouse mat :)

Yep, it was the mousemat. I have no problems with my trusty white page.

    Thanks
