Both PC and Laptop use the same router so maybe it could be done through that

Put them both on the same workgroup and share out the directory you want to get the stuuf out of. Type \\Your_PCs_name, and copy the stuff across. Simple.

Yeah definately use the ethernet cable, even if they are slow network cards. The alternatives are usb keys, burn a cd, serial connection (seriously slow!) or get a connector to plug your laptop hard drive into the pc IDE drive

No you don't have to put them in the same work group. All that does is makes it easier to view them in Explorer. All you need to know is either the names or IP addresses of both computers. Get the names by right clicking on my computer->properties and click on the tab that says "computer name" and bingo. Or if thats causing trouble get a machines IP address by going to start->run and type in "cmd". In the console window type ipconfig and it'll tell you the machines ip address. Then just go to the other PC and in any address bar type in \\other_machine_ip_address_here.
    I hope this works!

You can also try a firewire cable unless of course you have gigbit ethernet on both (slim chances), I find it to be the best choice just for convenience and speed. Also doesn't take up the ethernet port as well, tips on speed though, keep the file transfer at the front, windows multitasking is not really multitasking, it's more I'll do 1% of this and spend 99% on your word document.

Please specify the IP address and subnet of each computer (Instructions re: IPCONFIG were provided above).
Is this a home or work/college network? Do you have admin. rights on both machines (For later) ?

Can you successfully ping each machine?
