I've just recently started to get to know the "trusted computing" concept. What's the opinion on boards on owner override? Who should "own" my computer. Happened upon this wee flick on the net http://www.lafkon.net/tc/ It's against trusted computing http://www.againsttcpa.com/

Whats currently called "trusted computing" isn't anything of the kind. A proper trusted computing solution ought to allow the user to use their files where and when they want, but at the same time still provide a level of protection to the copyright owner.

How to do that is the hard part though...

I've got a fairly basic understanding of it, and was planning to read more.
Isn't this TCPA going to affect free operating systems and software?

Doesn't seem like a good idea.

Hopefully, there will always be well educated people in micro electronics, cryptography and software engineering, willing to circumvent the security mechanisms put in place by these big greedy companies.

I think for the moment we are safe. The only evil model I can think of that follows the doom and gloom version of trusted computing is the Valve steam platform.

Valve managed to create a method for distributing their software that makes illegal patching difficult and the software is designed to install of an encrypted base that requires registration to even install.

To be honest iv only seen one cracked versions working (Counter strike source). No not mine I bought the game in the first week.

The only thing that bothers me is the fact Microsoft’s business practices have over the years been Machiavellian to say the least. Do I trust Microsoft/wintel?

Does it really matter if small group out of billions do?

Looks like im goin to be spending more time in linux over the next few years!!

There is a _lot_ of FUD doing the rounds with respect to TCPA or whatever it's called now. www.redbrick.dcu.ie/~gavin/tcpa/essay.pdf is a brief overview of TCPA. It's perhaps a bit naive but there are plenty of references in it to perform some slightly more well informed research.

ps. In fact that document is 2 or 3 years old now, and the TCPA spec could be vastly different..
