Figures in the Irish Times today confirmed that more people watched the hurling final on RTE than the Ireland - France game.

Quite a coup for Hurling methinks.

Maybe people watched the Ireland v France game on SkySports.

The two biggest sporting events in Ireland of the year by a long way are the two All-Ireland finals, so there is no surprise in that survey's result.

I know I always try to avoid watching soccer on rte if I can help it. Two reason for this, Hamilton and Beglin.

As well as that loads of people were in the pub, so does that count as just one or two TV's ?

Place was mobbed i was in.

Pub audiences aren't factored into the Nielsen ratings. They only measure at-home viewing.
And given that the match was on a Wednesday evening (many people would have chosen to go to pub to watch after work) I think the figures would have been off.
So, I wouldnt go by this "coup" really.
The official ratings were higher, but it doesnt prove more people watched it.
(Both GAA All-Irelands finals are still among the dearest spots though)

A hell of a lot of People watch the Finals abroad as well on Setanta. You can now get the games on Setanta TV (along with other Sports) in the UK for £14 a month, and there is an extensive network of Pubs that have it on the Closed Network. I'm pretty sure those viewing figures would not (as they probably could not) have been taken into account.

well, no... but then you could say about all the French that watched the match in France, and elsewhere, too...

Yeah, but I think it's a given that were referring to Irish people watching as opposed French Supporters following their team.
Probably best to compare to the likes of the games against the Faroe Islands (population very small by comparison to France) if we're going to go for full on both sides viewership for Internationals, as opposed to France.

I would have thought there were plenty of people in pubs watching the All Ireland final too. the Big Tree and Quinns on their own had a population of approximately 17million on Sunday. Both places were absolutely wedged. Not to mention every local in the whole of Galway and Cork. It was/is and alway will be a great ocassion though even if we lost. Nothing can beat all ireland final weekend. the banter and the craic is unreal.

Not too mention all the people watching in America, Australia and around the world.

Hurling is second fiddle in Ireland - to Football, not soccer, always has been and always will. There is a hurling revival underway over the next five years, coupled that with Irelands near certain failure to qualify for Germany will cement the fact that soccer will never become bigger than hurling.

Sure the hurling final wasn't even a sell-out!

if the figures are correct which i dont think they are there can be only one reason for this hurling and gaelic football are much fast sports than soccer. This leads to a more exciting game to watch

Not in munster. Why do you think Kerry dominates the football, it's because Cork don't take the football seriously.

I used to like soccer but I'm finding it getting more boring by the minute and it's not as though it was a good sport to look at in the first place. I hope Ireland get knocked out of the world cup because after all, these sports are in competition with each other.

Thats true. Dublin will be a good team in about 6/7 years and there are others who'll come on too.

Being from Cork and knowing many GAA people I know what I'm talking about and don't presume I don't.

Half the Cork senior football team are from the 1 club, Nemo Rangers. There are over 259 clubs in Cork. Cork clubs beat Kerry clubs all the time, so how is there such a difference between Cork and Kerry intercounty teams??You do the maths. There are alot of politics in Cork also. Large parts of the county are overlooked therefore no matter how good a player is he has no chance ever of playing for Cork.

This is well known btw. Do a little research before you call people stupid.

It is a ridiculous statement! Do not try and justify it. You may be from a hurling area where football is not considered as important, but there are also football areas. Stop talking such crap please.

Waylander, do you think Kilkenny or waterford take football seriously? Do you think Tyrone and Armagh are putting as much effort in their underage hurling teams as they do their football teams? You don't honestly think all counties treat football and hurling as equals, do you? Also as you said, there are football and hurling areas in counties. Why is that?

In the last twenty years Cork have been in 5 or 6 finals, and won 2 All Irelands, do not feed me bull about them not caring about football.

Because there are over 250 clubs to choose from! They should be there or there abouts every year!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,832 ✭✭✭Waylander

Dublin has well over a million people million people and the biggest clubs in the country but are not there or there abouts every year, and they are trying. You don't get a record like Corks without putting effort into it, and working hard at it. To say anthing else is ridiculous!

Soccer is the most popular sport in Dublin by miles. Cork has more clubs and they are in rural areas.

Kerry dominate munster hands down! Thats fact! I'm giving you facts, if you don't believe me then thats fine. :p

I believe you that Kerry dominate Munster, but that is what the best teams tend to do. I also beleive you that Cork have over 250 clubs. I don't believe you when you tell me that Cork do not care about football. I don't believe that because it is BS. Cork are passionate about their football, and want to win it as much as any other county. To say otherwise is simply a lie!

in fairness most hurling games get poor enough attendance and viewing figures except for the all-ireland final which you would expect to have high figures.

I would have to say that this isn't a major coup for hurling as i would still think that due to numbers in pubs etc. that around the same number or maybe even more watched the france game.

dont forget there was nearly 50,000 more people at the hurling.
