RTE 2 Reception

Hello all - I've got a little quirk with my RTE 2 recepton I'd love to hear some theories on.

I'm in Dublin, with NTL analogue. I've got a Sony 28" Widescreen TV, and a Sony video (SLV 720 I think). Anyway, I've got the NTL feed coming into the video, and going on up to the television via coax, and I also have them connected by SCART.

When I look at RTE 2 on the TV, it's pin sharp, as are all the other channels. However, when I look at it via the video (on the TV's SCART input), the colours are weaker, and the picture is fuzzy. It's watchable, but notably less sharp than the TV version.

No amount of manual fine-tuning will improve the picture. I've even re-installed all the TV channels on the video (using the SmartLink feature) from the TV, but to no avail.

I've tried all three SCART inputs, to test the connector. I've tried different SCART cables, to see if it was the cable.

I haven't watched the video through the TV by tuning the TV into it yet.

The only other thing I havent tried yet, is to borrow someone else's video, and see if that makes any difference.

Any ideas? Could it just be the video? Is RTE2 on some frequency that my video can't tune in 100%?

    Any suggestions would be great!

It sounds as though the channel is offset. Is there an AFC on the video ? Try turning it off, or it could be that the video's RF out is clashing with the RTE 2 Channel in your area ?

Some videos have an attenuator switch at the back to pad down the level of incoming signal to offset interference with the video's RF output. This may not be noticeable on the TV loopthrough signal, but the tuner in the video may be more sensitive. If there is an attenuator, try switching it in the opposite direction.

Also, make sure that the video is not picking up the off-air RTE2 from Three Rock (UHF). Ensure that it is tuned to RTE2 on NTL's VHF band 3.

Thanks for those suggestions, I'll try them tonight and get back here.

As for being tuned to a different RTE 2 station, the video and TV should be tuned to the same bands, as I sync'd them from the tv's channels (using the Sony's smartlink, which sets up the same channels on the video as are on the tv).

In my experience, a great many of these so called "smart" features on technical equipment are not nearly as clever as they think they are! Try doing a manual tune to see if that helps.
