...is there a need to have held a full licence for a certain period of time, say 6 months?

Depends on where you are going I suppose.
What do you plan on doing , Renting a car ?
Check the terms and conditions on car rental sites for the location you will be in

I have driven in both Europe, the US and Canada, and in my experience, they only look at your address and your age.

I don't think look at how long you have had the licence.

I think you will find that you need to have a full licence for a year before you can rent a car with most companies. However I reckon they are not aware of this at local offices and you wont have a problem renting. However if you had a claim and it was serious enough i would think that is where you could have a problem..................I can remember my mate using using his provisional licence using MY credit card to rent convertibles at the weekend for little or nothing in the states. We took NO INSURANCE ! I can't imaging the problems if there had been an accident. When questioned about provisional licence, we said that it just meant that you could drive north and south of the border !

    Thanks for the info.

Wife has a full one for years so it's not really a problem, but she just doesn't want to drive abroad again and I've only got mine recently.

    good answer !

However, don't Provisional Licences now have "For the holder to learn to drive only. Not valid outside Ireland" (or words to that effect) written on them ??
