    Hows it going lads, I've been thinking of installing a linux distro. Just wondering are there media players for Linux that will play MKV and OGM files?

    Mplayer and VLC should have no problems playing these files.
    Mplayer I would try first as VLC mightn't play some dependant on what they're encoded with. It won't play back Real Media (RV30 and RV40) I know some people use that kind in MKV.

    Mplayer is the daddy, grab that and the two codec packs and you're laughing.

    mkv and ogm files are just packages for different files, they accept streams, multiple audio streams, video streams and text streams.
    they could use many codecs, for example an avi xvid or divx or such.
    mplayer (and other good players) will have support for ogm

    mkv is matroska , matroska.org

    in gentoo you would just
    USE="matroska ogg" emerge mplayer

    although there is alot more mplayer can do
    USE="-xmms X alsa mmx mmx2 aalib dvd fbcon freetype truetype libcaca ogg opengl sse sse2 svga network encode xvid xv dts truetype matroska win32codecs aac"

    Well presuming its his first linux distro he might want to try something that doesn't take 3 days to install
