Hi, I'm starting Trinity College here in October, and I was wondering, what's the story with the books I am going to need for my course? The University hasn't sent me anything so I have no idea what I need to buy. Will they tell us this stuff during Fresher's week or do I need to figure it out myself and stuff? And where to buy books?

Generally you'll find out in the first lecture of each class what books you'll need. Often where to get these books, too. Hodges Figgis usually has everything you'll need, though, or you could try the SU bookshop, or even just use the library (though the main textbooks'll probably be difficult to get a hold of a lot of the time). Worry not.

Depending on course, you may not need to buy too many books.

I did JF BESS last year and I would not have needed anything but the Maths books. You can get most from the library and if you are good at a subject you don't need the book.

Of course it would be different for something like science.

Lucky me then; It turns out I am doing science :( Or at least Computer Science :)

Yeah I found the thread you were talking about....how the hell was I supposed to know that the information and answers that I was looking for about books for starting 1st year as a prospective shtudent would be contained inside a thread with such an arcane, obscure and esoteric title as "Prospective Students: Q&A and Information on courses"...geh :(:(

And yes, ladies get preference :)

Ok now it's really confusing skimming through the thread, cos it looks like I posted most of the replies...

Ah, he wasn't being narky about it, he was just saying that there was more useful information elsewhere.

Heh, I was taking the piss at myself for not reading the obvious link ( well in fairness I tried, but it looked like it was getting trolled all over the gaff so I gave up halfway through) :) Look at my wording:

Although I know sarcasm doesn't carry easily over the interweb, so I'll let you off by just acting snooty to you forever :)

    a prospective shtudent
You could just be a drunken prospective student?! Ha, well maybe I'll be snooty right back at ya... Once I've worked out who you are... ;)

No, I was implying snorlax is a lady - am I wrong? :o

One thing for computer science students - check the fricking hamilton library - nobody in cs uses the books there at all (all of them buying their own books instead) so there are at least 8 copies of each book you will use during first year.

caveat emptor and all that, was just how my year was.

Snorlax changed her avatar to the Darkwing Duck one that Myth and I also share, and said 'Ladies get preference'. But then I pointed out I was also a lady, and she changed it back
