An bhfacha éinne an clár teilifíse faoi Gay Byrne an lá eile. Bhí Gay ag rá faoina óige agus dúirt sé go raibh múinteoir náisiúnach aige agus bhí tuismitheoirí ar a mhalairt aige. Dúirt sé, nach raibh sin aige, bheadh sé ina phoblachtánach cheart agus dúirt sé go mbeadh sé ar a laghad ina 'Ghaeilgeoir'. Bhí sé ag déanamh ceangal díreach idir lucht na Gaeilge agus lucht an IRA sealadach. Bhí sé go huafásach agus chuir sé isteach orm go mór. Léiríodh an ardnósacht atá ag daoine i measc na Gaeilge agus léiríodh go gceapann daoine áirithe go bhfuil ceangal ann idir an ghluais phoblachtach agus athbheochan na Gaeilge. Is scanall mór é gur craoladh é agus gur cuma le chuile duine.

Ba cheart go mbeadh bród ort go ndearna sé ceangal idir Ghaeilgeoirí cosúil leat féin agus trodairí na saoirse.

Ah gabh suas ort féin, níl siad ag troid anois pé scéal é. An raibh siad ag troid le gnáthdhaoine, sin iad na daoine a éagadh.

Forgive me for replying "as bearla" but nationalism and the language will always be linked in most peoples minds. Maybe its because there really is a link.

Great turn of phrase. Even gets past the auto censor. ;)

There isn't a link. Every Gaeilgeoir I've encoutered bar two were in no way republicans, most had a severe disdain for Sinn Féin and the IRA. Most are scholars or minority-language enthusiasts. The link is over-used by people who don't want to learn Irish and need an excuse. And even if there is a link, it is not right to tar ever Gaeilgeoir because of the actions of few.

Have another look. I never said Republican. I said Nationalist. There is a differerence. From my viewpoint its the like difference between anger and pride.
