Just remember folks, you might be entitled to get tax back on Postgrad tuition fees that you pay (this can be as much as 20% back so its well worth investigating). I dont know the situation with Undergrad fees, there's so many "if" and "but" clauses, but sure thats always the way. Check the revenue website for further details....

I got tax back from Postgrad fees a few years ago. It works even if you do your postgrad abroad.

Is it possible to do this retrospectively? I started working straight after doing my postgrad, though that was two years ago. Could've been entitled to some of my tuition fees back and it'd be VERY useful right now!

I dont know if there is a certain time limit in which you can apply for your tax back.

I applied for mine a few months after my postgrad finished (if i remember correctly) and there was no problem. There may be a time limit (by the end of the subsequent tax year)... or there may be no time limit. I really dont know.

It'd be sure worth investigating though, even after two years. Arent those tax people a right bunch of sneaky c**ts, they never make noise about what we're entitled too, but they're all to quick to point out what we owe them! Nasty.

I am nearly sure it has to be done within the year that you have paid fees, it cant be done before you pay fees only after.

There is a 12,700 max payback on it

    Hi,

To get your tax back I think you will have to have clocked up enough PRSI yourself like working full time for over 2 years (something like that)

I applied under my dads PRSI (saying that he paid my fee's) as I only worked part time.

If you paid in installments you will need to keep all reciepts. I paid in quarterly installments and had to fill out the form (IT 31) 4 times with each payment reciept.

Not all post grad courses qualify for tax back check it out at
    http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/it/leaflets/it31.html

It takes till end of tax year to get money back and i think you have 1 - 2 years to claim your tax back... So get moving!!

    Hi all,

Does anyone know when is the best time to apply for the tax back? I just paid €4575 off my €6325 fee's for the coming year. Could I apply for 20% of what I have paid now or should I wait til January? Also does it matter that I have only paid 3/4 of the fees instead of the full amount. Cheers

    Hi there,

I'm about to go from full-time employment back into full-time education.
I have to pay fees, so I'm very interested in this thread.

This may be something of a stupid question but, assuming my course is eligible for tax relief & all that, can I only claim the tax relief if I have been working during the year in which I paid the fees?

What I mean is, assuming I stopped working, or didnt earn enough with PT work to pay tax, can I still make the claim against each year of my fees for the full four years of the course, or would I only be able to claim for fees paid this year, against tax paid this year?

    Thanks,
