    Hi Lads,

My bro is a mechanic and feels he is being underpaid. He is going to ask his boss for a raise, the only problem is he isn't sure how much to ask for. Can anyone tell me how much a fully qualifed mechanic (qualified 3 years) should be on.

    Thanks.

Perhaps contacting Fás or a Trade Union would be a way to find out such info ?
    ........or S.I.M.I ?

If Koping Motors labour charge is anything to go by, a mechanic must earn €3,315 for 39 hours. Because surely the hourly labour charge is for the mechanics !!!

LOl, they're not afraid to charge, they quoted me €948 to get a dent the size of a small cig. lighter repaired a while back, got it done properly for €200 elsewhere.

A quick call to SIPTU will get you the union approved rate but depending on where he is working he could be getting a fair bit more than that. Most franchised dealerships operate a bonus scheme of some sort, for example based on the profitability of the workshop, getting work done in less time than the "book" says it should take etc.

This is €85 per hour and pretty much standard with dealerships.
However, whilst expensive, it isn't just for the mechanics - its for ESB, heating, insurance, rates, etc.

Im not defending them and I would imagine that there are no poor dealer owners but the way things have gone recently, many of them probably have huge repayments back on building fancy premesis.

I suppose if he's four years qualified he would negotiate his salary and depending on how good/fast he is.

Believe me kbannon, being in business myself I understand overheads. But come on. €85 an hour (plus VAT btw) is extortion. When you consider that a dealerships supposed main business is selling cars, it seems to me that charging outrageous amounts for servicing is kind of shooting the goose. I for one would never go back to a dealer if I felt I'd been ripped off. So, for me, their double edged sword becomes no sword at all.

I think unkel hit the nail on the head. Anyone know where the owner of Murphy and Gunn lives? I do, and he's not slumming it in Rathfarnham, Churchtown, Howth or Malahide.

hes a successful businessman, u cant compare really joe bloggs looking for servicing to someone who owns 10+million of property built from 2 or more franchises. yes they do overcharge but that rate is the going rate. more than 50% is overheads the rest profit of course.
quite frankly regardless of what u pay i dont think alot of the work done is done particularly competently...
