Am a big fan of EBay. Key thing here is obviously the feedback rating of the person you are buying off. Worth your while looking through the feedback people have given them.

As far as I know, you are covered up to £500 by PayPal, assuming you use them to pay.

Problem would presumably be if you are buying second hand kit off someone rather than a brand new in box item. That said, my brother got a storming second hand laptop for a great price.

I've bought 2 graphics cards off ebay. Both were in perfect nick. Saved a packet doing so.

You just have to bear in mind that if it does go belly up, you're going to have to deal direct with the manufacturer. Also, be very careful with the feedback ratings.

Its non-ecc and non-parity, meaning a pc with this ram is more likely to have random blue screens of death. If you want your pc to be reliable, i dont recommend this.

Be Careful though. I bought 2 x 1GB modules off the same fella in the link above and they are only registering in the BIOS as 512MB each.

Did you get in touch with the guy? It was probably a mistake by one or other of you.

make sure its correct and give him feedback to reflect this so other people see what he's up to...

give him neutral and see if he'll resolve it....

i got two BFG 6800GT OC's and saved a load, and still never seen one for sale in ireland yet, but main reason i went for BFG is that they have a lifetime warrenty, direct with them.
    regards

Bought 5 lappies off eBay over the past 2 years, never a dud yet and always at least half-the-price of what a similar-specced lappie goes for in the FS Forum here... (Portege 7020/Jornada 820/Dell C600/Thinkpad 240X/Dell D600)

Bought Radeon 9700 Pro card, HP printer, D-Link WiFi hub, WiFi Intel PCMCIA card, WiFi Intel miniPCI, €000s of videogames consoles and games, etc, etc... never a bother.

As posted before, it's all in
(1a) the feedback (do follow the live linkies to the items sold, don't just read the feedback)
(1b) the items on which the feedback is based compared to the oner you're interested
    (2) the 'look-and-feel' of the auction page (eBay 'jobber' like me, a sale and/or a buy every now and then; or eBay store; or scammer)
    (3) the facts listed about the item FS (do the manufacturer specs match up?)
    (4) the speed/courtesy/again 'look-and-feel' of any correspondance with the seller before the auction ends.

People tend to forget a lot that eBay is pretty much caveat emptor - it's emphetically not like buying in a mortar and brick store or Amazon. So, two very important rules with eBay for newbies:
    (a) check the item value from equivalent, recently-completed sales and set yourself a max bid
    (b) BE PATIENT - don't overbid your max by €10 on a Sunday (when everyone is at it) when you could win the same item for €10 less on a Tuesday night.

For any more, go check the Boards\Biz\Online auctions Forum :)

I'm pretty sure thats only if the seller offers the protection package. It costs them more to offer it.

I bought an x800xt about a year ago now and saved quite a bit of money. The guy marked its value as 40 euro so I did not have to pay import taxes.

To be honest even though the guy had positive feedback I was quite nervous.

I have bought most of my parts from Komplett but the lure of big savings and availabilty of the newer cards on ebay makes it quite tempting :)

Unless it was a serious bargain, I wouldn't buy computer hardware off ebay. At the moment, the auction listed by the OP for the processor is up to £123, plus £12 postage. That's about €200. The one on komplett is €230 + 10 post.

Personally, I wouldn't say it's worth the €40 saving, of course you could get a good one but then you never know. Feedback is also a bit hit and miss. A lot of traders on ebay hold the feedback system to ransom. They don't give feedback to the buyer until after the buyer leaves positive feedback for them. These kind of guys (usually in HK) can sometimes be dodgy.

Buyer beware, and all that. If it's a significant saving, like 40-50%, then it's probably worth it.

ive bought a couple of things of ebay over the last year and the key like said is to look at the feedback and the powerseller icon.
