    do i charge vat to us companies for a service i sold to them (for example a website) ?

    Nope. Strictly speaking US companies should be charging us VAT now, but the EU doesn't seem to have been too successful implementing it.

    so where do i account for the sale on my vat return (as its not intra eu!!)

    You just charge it at 0% VAT as a sale.
